How do I restore Windows Live Mail?

    Folks,

I've upgraded my wife's laptop to W10. (She hated/despised W8, W8.1, until I installed the Start8 shell.) Whereas W10 is a great improvement, the bundled email software is not.

W10's mail program does not allow new folders to be created (you can add pre-existing ones, but you cannot make your own); it does not allow you to look at all unread emails (you've got to go into each account); the upgrade process wiped out all her contacts (I'm hoping they still exist somewhere on her hard-drive).

How do I reinstall Windows Live Mail?

    Thanks,
    Ken

I can't remember off the top of my bonce if it works on Win 10 Release, with or without jumping through hoops, but I want to say no. There are a number of threads on here about it.

I use Thunderbird, the interface is like old school Outlook but you have full control over everything and it's massively customisable.

eM Client is similar to Windows Live Mail.

WLM survived the upgrade to W10 on my computer. Did you lose it? You should be able to reinstall by installing Windows Essentials and choosing WLM during the install.

Use the link Flik provided or here's an alternative
Windows Essentials download options - Free Email, Instant Messaging, and Photo Editing Software from Microsoft

Select the lanuguage you want and download the web installer stub (wlsetup-web.exe)

You can install all Windows Essentials applets or choose the ones you want to install

I only use Mail, so I'm not sure if the others works on Win10.

If the installer complains about .NET 3.5, you'll have to turn that version of .NET on in Programs & Features Turn Windows features on or off.

Ahhh....I thought that the links would do it: to no avail. I am told that I already have "mail" installed, when I followed the links and I downloaded Windows Essentials 2012.

The W10 update never gave any sort of option to import favorites or contacts. I didn't think I'd need to manually import them. (Yeah, I know. But I thought after all the friggin' public testing that all the warts were removed.)

W10 imported all the programs, etc., that she used. Why couldn't it import contacts and favorites? (I've found the favorites folder in the Windows.old directory.)

So...since W10 mail is working...with no contacts...how do I import her old contacts from the Windows.old directory?

    Thanks,
    Ken

You could try removing the Mail app and then try installing weMail again.

If you already have mail in the Mail app - I'm not sure how to back that up.
You could check the server to see if the mail is still there - that would be your backup.

If you want to proceed, here are the instructions to remove Mail app:

    Launch PowerShell
Enter the following command to get a list of apps
    get-appxPackage

Look for microsoft.windowscommunicationsapps - that is the Mail and Calendar apps

Copy the value of PackageFullName for that app, use the PowerShell remove-appxPackage command with the FulPackageName to remove the app:
Using what was returned on my machine, the command would be
    remove-appxPackage microsoft.windowscommunicationsapps_17.6020.42011.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe

The PackageFullName might be different on your machine, you need to enter the specific name when you run the remove-appxPackage command.

Here's what get-appxPackage returned on my machine for Mail

    Attribute : Value
    Name : microsoft.windowscommunicationsapps
    Publisher : CN=Microsoft Corporation, O=Microsoft Corporation, L=Redmond, S=Washington, C=US
    Architecture : X64
    ResourceId :
    Version : 17.6020.42011.0
    PackageFullName : microsoft.windowscommunicationsapps_17.6020.42011.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe
    InstallLocation : C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\microsoft.windowscommunicationsapps_17.6020.42011.0_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe
    IsFramework : False
    PackageFamilyName : microsoft.windowscommunicationsapps_8wekyb3d8bbwe
    PublisherId : 8wekyb3d8bbwe
    IsResourcePackage : False
    IsBundle : False
    IsDevelopmentMode : False

    Folks,

This is resolved. I'll give you the narrative, and, perhaps, someone at MS will learn from it, fix it, and help others.

The issue has been the Mail program in W10. This is the big, double-width, icon you see in the Start Menu; "Mail".
It will not let my wife create new folders, like "Kitchen Ideas" or whatever. Also, it is as slow as molasses to open up and use. ("Mail" would take over 10 minutes to check for, and download, new messages. Even to open an existing message would take over 10 minutes.)

As well as being unresponsive and uncustomizable, it also flushed all her contacts. Unhappy wife.

Using the advice, above, I downloaded and installed eM. It's free it looks good, etc. I set it up on her machine. It fulfilled the requirement to be customized and it was very responsive.

Unfortunately, it did not restore her contacts. (Nor could I find them anywhere using search and various suffixes with a *.)

When she came home, I sat down with her to show her the new eM program. I opened up W10, and started to scroll down the Start Menu. Lo and behold, all the way at the bottom, was Windows Live Mail. Huh. Click. It opened up...with all her contacts intact.

I'd never scrolled past all the Start Menu crap down to the bottom. The "movie" and other fluff. There's a lot there...which has never been used, nor will be.

I'm glad WLM was imported into the W10 upgrade and that it kept the contacts. It had been there all along, hidden in plain sight.

I cannot excoriate the design and dysfunctionality of "Mail" enough. It is horrible. Maybe it was left in for a non-email user? I don't know.

eM is a great little program.

WLM contacts should not be hidden when searching. I looked in "Windows.old" and also in "C:". Never found 'em until I opened WLM.

    Anyhow, thanks for the help.

    Ken

Good news indeed, Ken. I will be upgrading a friend's system which has Windows Mail (not Windows Live Mail) and I hope to be able to *not* lose contacts and email when I do it, (or we may not be friends after that!), and your solution gives me hope...
