Why is IE (sometimes) launched although it is not my default browser?

    Out of curiosity ..
I have set a different browser as default.

Sometimes, specifically when called on from within an application (e.g. check for updates)
Internet Explorer is launched, although another browser has been configured to be the default.

    How come?
Is it the application that specifically calls on IE instead of the default browser?

    Thanks.

Some extensions are supported only in IE so it opens it. You can get rid of IE altogether if you want to.

That particular SW called for it most probably. See what happens if you disable IE.

Typically when an application needs to access a browser it will use the default browser. Whenever possible this is the preferred procedure. But it isn't always practical. In some cases the software developer requires more control and in such situations the only practical alternative is to use Internet Explorer. Microsoft is well aware of these situations and provides documented methods of access. Third party browsers generally don't provide for such control and whatever is will be browser specific. In many cases the only way for the developer to get consistent results is to directly access Internet Explorer.

    Sorry for the delay.

All clear. Thank you very much for your detailed explanation.
Initially one would expect Edge but if compatibility with Windows v7 / v8 should be maintained, well then it is better to keep IE in place

    Again, thanks.
