MS IE and MS Edge won't play nicely

I am trying to resolve an issue with my nephew's laptop. After a Remote repair tech in a third world country hosed this machine, I was able to repair the Win 10 Home installation. The owner wants/ needs to be able to use Edge, and IE 11 at the same time. Evidently the company he is franchised to is still in the dark ages. Some of their web sites only function in IE11, and some in MS Edge. I have been fighting frozen pages from "long script errors", or with IE as default, it opens other pages in Edge.
This computer has gotten me so confused, I can't even think straight. I did manage to install GPEdit.msc, but have no idea what to do with it. The owner thinks delete and reinstall Edge will cure the issues. He is computer illiterate.
There are other little things, like desktop shortcuts have to be a right click, then "open".
I feel like I am rambling, as I need to recover from another day of fighting this machine.

Re-install windows again - IE11 and Edge both work together (I don't like either but that's not the issue here).

You might find some sites don't work with IE11 properly but that's for the owners of those sites.

I still have to use IE11 as some screens in an SAP type of system make Internet calls with IE11 - they are changing though but for corporations of the size of SAP and the 1000's of customers that change can only proceed at essentially Glacial Speed as anybody who has done assignments at huge companies will realize only too well --so I understand what the OP says about some businesses requiring require IE11 for a while yet.

I did the in place upgrade repair as suggested. It fixed a lot of problems. The desktop shortcuts were added to save me some clicks opening pages like control panel, etc. They will be deleted when and if I can get this machine straightened out. Right now it seems the biggest problem is opening IE11. It acts like there is an anchor tied to it's azz. I can open "HTTP://www dot msn dot com" with Edge, no problem. Or on another machine no problem. Chrome is fine on the problematic machine. I just keep getting error message about long running script, or MSN is not responding and recover webpage.

I noticed something interesting by mistake. IE was jamming the computer, as it does when trying to load it. I shut down the computer, then restarted it. After I signed in, IE started when the screen came up. It darn near loaded instantly, and I could scroll up and down the page, no issue. I refreshed the page, no issue at all. I noticed the Norton Security add-on was not there. So, I turned off IE, and attempted to open it again. Back to slow as cold molasses in January. The Norton does not seem to affect opening speed at all, with or without it.
So, I decided to give it a test. I left IE open and shut down the computer. Then I restarted the computer and IE popped right up after I logged in. And very fast opening, too. I think it's time to try starting in safe mode to see what happens.
