Can I suggest people consider using 2FA. If you have a secondary gmail account you could set it up there to get feel.

I just set up my alternate gmail account on 2FA for test purposes, already using for main account just not in Win 10 mail.

It worked flawlessly. I even added a folder in Win 10 mail app and a couple of minutes later it showed on my account I had open in browser.

While 2FA may sound cumbersome it isn't. I use the text codes to my cell as the security option. Basically the only time it is needed is when I sign in from a strange device. (I don't use the code generator).

It walks you through the process. Document and keep your back up codes or one of their alternate verification process. You WILL need them. I had my battery replaced and erased my phone with my now defunked generator. There are a hundred use cases where your phone isn't available. I had my backup codes so no problem.

Then get an app password. It shows you where to install for existing accounts. If you are setting up a new account in Win 10 mail it wants your real password and will challenge you for code. Appears app passwords is only needed if account is already established in mail.

Once on 2FA also impacts your cell / tablet and browsers. Again get an app password is simple enough and browser asks for codes. My gmail mail app on phone hasn't asked for a verification process since I set it up last April after battery replaced. My desktop when I installed chrome in Jan 2018. (You will need codes to enter security options even on known devices.))

I use 2FA on every account that permits.

Of course not everyone will be comfortable with this hence the suggestion to try on alternate (Free) account.

Looks like to me Microsoft is doing away with the mail and calendar app, and wants us to use Outlook. This to me would be Microsoft saying get a subscription now, or later. Not a big fan of store apps, but for know I have purchased EasyMail which works fine. As for the calendar I am using google calendar via web.

I'm surprised that gmail doesn't have an app for Win 10. With all their resources you would think they could put one together pretty fast.

The Outlook app, last time I looked was lacking. This was a while ago, they may have updated, but I could not add a contact in Outlook on iOS phone.

Could not agree more. A google app for gmail would be nice.

They clearly want people to just use the web interface since they have their hooks into it.

Actually I think they want people to use 2FA.

It is pretty much everywhere, Outlook.com, Yahoo, Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, my bank and this forum.

I'm using 2FA, and it won't sync. This is a problem on window's end.

Hi Bastet, and thanks for the welcome. I think earlier in this thread it was mentioned that 2-factor could be an issue, along with having "Allow access by less secure apps:" being switched to OFF. So I went in to my Google account and confirmed 2-factor is off and allow-less-secure-apps is ON. I keep getting the Windows 10 message balloon in the lower righthand corner of the screen that says "Your John's Gmail account settings are out-of-date" as in the below screen shot. Then, every time I click on the right side where it says "Attention required", it provides "Fix account" and "Change settings" options. I select "Fix account" and am provided the second screen shot where the password field is blank. I fill-out the password, which I know to be correct, and it still does not work. It's like the Windows 10 app won't store the password for Gmail accounts. It does for Yahoo and Outlook accounts, just not Gmail. Frustrating.
Then the best bet would be to turn on two-factor authentication, this has been known to fix the ‘your settings are out of date’ message.
Many companies are moving over to using this security feature.
Sometimes email settings stop working in order to get users to move over to using it in order to correct the problem imo.

Please confirm you have used an app password... even get a new one.

Try this, worked for me: (and yes you have to do it for mail and then calendar separately)

Open your browser and open your Google account settings (not Gmail settings!).

Open Sign in & security tab and scroll down a little bit until you see on your right side of the screen App passwords.

Open it and Select app - Mail, Select device - Windows hit generate.

Do not close the yellowish window yet leave it open and go to your Windows Mail app.

Take in the app add profile and choose the lowest setting - Advanced setup.

Enter your email, login (same as email but without @gmail.com) and in the password window copy that yellow password you generated in Google account settings before.

Enter other settings as desired (your name, account name).

    Enter IMAP settings Incoming - imap.gmail.com, Outgoing - smtp.gmail.com

Leave every box ticked in at the bottom of this setup and hit create or whatever it says there.
