Can I suggest people consider using 2FA. If you have a secondary gmail account you could set it up there to get feel.
I just set up my alternate gmail account on 2FA for test purposes, already using for main account just not in Win 10 mail.
It worked flawlessly. I even added a folder in Win 10 mail app and a couple of minutes later it showed on my account I had open in browser.
While 2FA may sound cumbersome it isn't. I use the text codes to my cell as the security option. Basically the only time it is needed is when I sign in from a strange device. (I don't use the code generator).
It walks you through the process. Document and keep your back up codes or one of their alternate verification process. You WILL need them. I had my battery replaced and erased my phone with my now defunked generator. There are a hundred use cases where your phone isn't available. I had my backup codes so no problem.
Then get an app password. It shows you where to install for existing accounts. If you are setting up a new account in Win 10 mail it wants your real password and will challenge you for code. Appears app passwords is only needed if account is already established in mail.
Once on 2FA also impacts your cell / tablet and browsers. Again get an app password is simple enough and browser asks for codes. My gmail mail app on phone hasn't asked for a verification process since I set it up last April after battery replaced. My desktop when I installed chrome in Jan 2018. (You will need codes to enter security options even on known devices.))
I use 2FA on every account that permits.
Of course not everyone will be comfortable with this hence the suggestion to try on alternate (Free) account.
