I will do the disabling step. Then install OO Shut up and see what takes place.

I still do not plug in ethernet until some of this is discussed. At this stage, if Cortana is disabled, the annoying
'you're not connected' messages should go away.

I use an alternative Start Menu with it's own search built in. It doesn't use windows search which is disabled.

I can't recommend it though as the software will not be receiving any further updates. It's probably best to go with your own choice of start menu replacement.

Start Menu for me looks like this:

RE: Classic Shell. There's some info here:

I know that quite a few members of this forum use it. Maybe they can comment.

There is more to this-- to get _less_ --all the time.

I've done a few readings but still haven't hit the button yet. Got sidetracked with hardware upgrades.

Anyway I'm still active in this, just slow.

I will get Shutup going on one of my live internet boxes.

This was a dead end since my live machines are on Win7. Onward to something else.

I have not been prompt on doing these steps. I apologize for delays in getting solved.
One thing that is stopping me mentally with Win 10 sitting there without ethernet connection is what to do
first. I believe that turning off Updates should happen first and that is my intention-- turn off updates.

I saw two procedures for that. One in Services which I did. But that somehow did not seem enough.
There are over 200 services and I do not know if there are other interactions to turn off. Black Viper is not responsive on individual topics.

I got bogged down on implementing the other fallback which is to adjust -- can't recall the term:
certifications but that's not it. I'll get that info tomorrow and get started again.

I will give the direct link that shows the screen shots of turning off updates when successful.

In Services Windows Updater can be turned off. I did that but on reboot it reverted to manual.
A more careful reading of my source reprinted here is that while in services.msc and woth Properties Open
in Windows Updater Select Disable must be followed by clicking the Revert Tab at top of window and
select Take No Action on each of the three actions shown, most importantly the first one, then all subsequent ones.

Use Windows Key on keyboard (lower Left Logo Key with Start on it)
    type services.msc

Find Windows Update Service in the list

Right click to highligh and select Stop

In that same screen Properties is shown Right click that
Then in the Windows Update Properties

    Select Disable > Apply

Go to Retry Tab , Select Take No Action for First Second Third and all retries.

    Click on Apply.

Shut down PC. Reboot from cold to see if it has all stayed as selected.

After these stps I think I am ready to connect the Ethernet.

Note: Using Wifi or having that connected involves another procedure.

I am a civilian. I'm doing this for other civilinas that may have the same problems in tracking
all the things to do for this one step on the goal of privacy.
