How do I determine at the CMD prompt which IE is on the install? 9. 10, or 11? I am ignorant about any of this.
I do not want to open it up. Perhaps it is in Properties? The icon pinned to the task bar only opens to something called MicroSoft Edge. Maybe it only looks like the IE icon. I have the ethernet off of that machine. Not even connected for homenet because I can activate IE through Cortana by mistake which seeks web access.

Far as I know, only IE-11 is shipped now with any Win 10.

If you look in your Programs and Features, it should look like this. Checked if installed.

It will not automatically put an Icon on the taskbar. The Edge Icon is automatic. You would have to open IE-11, and pin it to the taskbar. Or find the .exe file and pin that to the taskbar.

    The .exe is here:

Yes it must be 11. I gave it a whirl with the codes in order and '9' gave an error but I'll ' skip down to 11 and see
what that does. Thanks for assistance. I do not understnad much at all about the 10 Shell or renaming conventions
    of past releases.

Is there a 'completion' message that dispalys when the right code at C: is issued? I have run the command at C: rather than system 32.

Will mark complete when this element is done.

Beware some older programs require Internet Explorer to be installed to function.

My goal is to have as little chatter back to M$ as possible. This seems like a tall order as there
are many things to turn off to get some privacy. One thing at a time. I'm building quite a 'to-do' list.
Hi, just an idea, how about having a constructive experience instead of a destructive one, build up your linux experience adding things and learning new things (constructive) instead of working hard on how to dismantle windows (destructive).
Whith linux you can have back 100% of your system and be sure that you are the real owner.
(even if possibly off topic, sorry for that)

Please distinguish privacy from telemetry carefully. I see 0 network activity when my PC is idle. Your ISP will probably 'know' more about you than MS, and Google search history holds a lot if you use Google. Cortana is probably the worst 'risk' if you worry about privacy- but you don't need to use it.

If you wish to use (free) tools such as
O&O Shutup, Spybot Antibeacon etc, there are some useful settings. You may find you get “Some settings are managed by your organization” showing on some Settings screens after using these. But at least they are easily reversible and I suppose proven.
I'm rereading this thread more carefully a second time. I missed this mention of o&O Shut up and Antibeason though I know Spot Search and Destroy. I did not know of these programs but without hijacking my own thread , why does the program HiJack This remove items I've selected
and they come back at next bootup? It's a long list of 20 or so items coded '23' and have the
notation file not found or failed. I check them to delete, it does and the next time they
or something that looks like it are all back to be deleted again. Let me know if a fresh topic is needed or
better yet an answer given earlier.

The monitoring programs are interesting but I do not want things in the tray flashing on and off
    or other user candy.

This is certainly a good idea and good for discussion for others who might be thinking about it. I'll not make a long editorial but years ago I wanted to get off MS in the XP era. I tried to use nothing but Linux at the time for
3 months. I just gave up and here's why: I got sick of looking at "permission denied" at everything
and anything I wanted to do. The experience with help forums acting as "tree house clubs" put me off as well.
I have not had that experience at TenForums. There are big barriers to using Linux. Just last night I watched a youtube purportedly on Linux for Windows users. It was one of those click festivals where the guy talks too fast and assumes absolutely no questions from the target Windows user-- like installing anything beyond Firefox and Thunderbird.

I also subscribed to Marcel Gagne's listserver as a lurker for years. The problem is that me sitting here by
myself would be as profitless to learn Linux as it would to learn Chinese. You need feedback and turoring. One time
Marcel Gagne responded to a comment I made on his listserve. He said this is so easy I taught my dad how to use it.
Well I'm 70 now and was 65 or so then. My answer to him was "Marcel, your dad had you teaching him." Gagne is a Linux columnist at one of the magazines. He had no answer for that.

I have now copied the command for uninstalling IE 11 to my thumb drive. I might also put it on cd
    to save for future use.

I will be using the command string you give at c:.

It's hard for me to read code but I'm assuming this command is used at root.

    Will see how it goes.

Success. It gave me an uninstall message at the commad at c:
    Running a directory....

That tells me Internet Explorer is gone from root.

Thanks to all who helped. I will mark the thread solved shortly.

Onward to getting rid of Cortana at system level.

One more thing about "I have a hard time accepting the notion that Win 10-Home Updates for instance are what anybody 'signed up for.'", what we have known about Win7 and earlier is now better known in Win10 as WaaS or SaaS, Windows as a Service or Software as a Service. WaaS will continually be Upgraded and updated, always some change that affects other parts of it. Those tags can be added to programs that are being provided as subscriptions.
