Taking an eternity to find the page.

Right I will start off by saying my internet speed is not the quickest, well in fact it is pretty useless. I tend to average 3.0 to 3.5 MBPs. Now my problem is sometimes pages take an age to load. I use both Mozilla and Chrome both exhibit same problem. Mozilla dot moving back and forth and Chrome the circle going on forever. Now I use Google as my home page and a lot of times if I look at the bottom right of screen I see messages such as

    Looking up the site
    Connecting to the site
    Transferring data from google.com
A favourite is Waiting for fonts.googleapis.com

What the hell is this? Then again sometimes a pages loads nearly instantly.
At all times my reported speed is around the previously quoted 3.0 to 3.5

Now I use Ookla speedtest to get a rough idea of current download speed. If pages are loading everything is fine, if not I cannot get speedtest to run it shows in big red letters "LATENCY TEST ERROR"

Is there anything I could check that is obvious. I done the norm cleared history etc etc?

I would get ISP to run a check to their Modem / modem router. They should be able to tell if signal is okay. Old wiring can be an issue, cracks, water. Inside wiring can be an issue with "Noise" aka electrical interference. Old wires run along side high voltage.

Not sure of your ISP architecture but shared facilities can be influenced by other traffic. Yes at some point all facilities are shared but how much bandwidth is brought to that point. I'm on cable and see a definite drop right after school until around 9:00 pm. You should see a pattern.

    Try the ISP check.

It's worth settings your DNS to 1.1.1.1 & 1.0.0.1 in case it's a s!ow DNS as this is a fast one

Careful with setting a different DNS as a 3rd party will collect your browsing history.

    1. If your router has a build-in firewall - disable it.
    2. Use a cable, not Wi-Fi.
    3. Set your DNS servers, IP address, Gateway, etc. manually for the "Local Area Connection". Do not rely on DHCP.
    4. Configure Windows 10 & Firefox to be as quiet as possible (not calling home, not downloading stuff, not uploading telemetry, etc.) Use uMatrix to reduce network load.
    5. Use Windows Firewall Control 5.3.1.0 to block all outbound traffic except DNS and Firefox.

If your Internet connection is still slow, contact / change ISP.

You could try Page load time, it might give you a rough idea of the cause.

One other think before I start tinkering. The router has the usual lights, broadband, internet and 4 ethernet connection lights. Now while there are connections to the internet but nobody is actually browsing, the internet light constantly flashes rapidy as does the ethernet to my PC lamp. . Another of the ethernet connections goes via homeplugs to a different network and hence a laptop, there is very little activity shown by the light on this being solid most of the time.. Should these lights be rapidly flashing as if there is traffic ?

Maybe you will find this information in your router's user manual.

Well mine flash. I imagine it has to do with how asleep your device is with respect to lan port on Computer. I have mine set to not power down, (Power management tab for wired adapter)

Could also be something in router keeping connection open so its ready to use. (keep alive - heart beat)

I don't think you've said if this is DSL or cable but I'm assuming this is DSL (3 -3.5Mbps) and you are not that close to phone switch.
