Long ago MS stopped people using any browser but theirs from the Cortana \start menu\ taskbar search box- just search the internet for
'Cortana search browser' and you can read all about it.

However, I saw this recently which may help:
How to force Cortana to use your default browser | PCWorld

Let us know if it works for you.

Otherwise, yes, you should be able to set your chosen browser as default for file types, protocols so clicking on links opens your default browser. (Note- I have build 1709 as you can see from my specs).

When you go to https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/ does it ask you to use Firefox as your default browser?

I have 1803 and it astounds me that the default browser selections include only Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer & look for an app in the store.

I have 1803 too, and on the two machines with Firefox installed it appears along side Edge and IE in that selection box.

But the OP wasn't asking about the default browser - they are asking why, whatever browser you set as default and whatever search engine it uses by default, the results from the Cortana/Search box on Start are always Bing in Edge. This is by design...

    Microsoft have apparently blocked all the previously known ways of weaning Cortana from Edge/Bing, saying last April... {edit: that was April 2016}
...The only way we can confidently deliver this personalized, end-to-end search experience is through the integration of Cortana, Microsoft Edge and Bing – all designed to do more for you.

Starting today, to ensure we can deliver the integrated search experience designed for Windows 10, Microsoft Edge will be the only browser that will launch when you search from the Cortana box.

There is of course nothing stopping you opening Firefox and searching with Google, just not from Cortana.

The one and only concession is that you can still choose to launch IE instead of Edge from Cortana.
How can I make Cortana use Firefox and Google search engine?

PS: I have tested that in 1083 you can still choose to get Cortana to launch IE.

@Bree "I have 1803 too, and on the two machines with Firefox installed it appears along side Edge and IE in that selection box."
--- On my other 2 1903's Firefox isn't listed as a choice for a default browser.
--- Maybe it's listed once Firefox is the default browser? It would be interesting for me to know.

"But the OP wasn't asking about the default browser - they are asking why, whatever browser you set as default and whatever search engine it uses by default, the results from the Cortana/Search box on Start are always Bing in Edge. This is by design..."
Although I saw some post including Cortana/Search box mentioned in some posts, I didn't see the OP mention he wanted to keep Cortana active in his original post so maybe I'm missing something on how it was desired to continue using Cortana.
--- And as you said "This is by design..." That makes sense to me.
--- I would think if Cortana /Search box wasn't wanting to be kept. disabling Cortana would be the answer.

EDIT: I just noticed "whatever search engine it uses by default": is that the key?

The original question had two parts to it. From post #1...

I would like to use Firefox but I cannot find a way to set it as default browser, in particular when I open a search result from "start menu" Edge is fired up instead of Firefox; i searched but i'm not able to find a solution.
The OP's main problem was stated as an inability to set Firefox as the default browser (which you seem to suffer, but I don't). The OP then talked of the browser that launches from a Start search result (which is where Cortana comes into this, she does the Start searches). That's not related to setting a default browser, Cortana/Search results will launch Edge whatever your default browser is set to.

By post #3 the OP's focus had switched to the Search results...

That Setting is not enough, It is already in use and configured to use firefox, Edge is opened insted of firefox to display start menu search results.
As Microsoft stated in April 2016, by design it is no longer possible to choose which browser launches from Start's Search (aka Cortana),
...The only way we can confidently deliver this personalized, end-to-end search experience is through the integration of Cortana, Microsoft Edge and Bing – all designed to do more for you.
The solution Dalchina offered in post #12 is to use a third party utility that intercepts the call to open Edge...
EdgeDeflector is a small helper application that intercepts URIs that force-open web links in Microsoft Edge and redirects it to the system’s default web browser.

Hi, thanks for all your answers!

given the analisys and new info (dalchina #11 and bree #16) I'll try to explain what was my question (clear in post #5) and why it is "solved".

I was looking for a way to have "search/start box/cortana search" open up search results in Firefox because I use firefox and it is of course what I prefer to use also not being familiar with edge.
Info in posts # 11 and 16 are clrear start+cortana+edge are one bundle so crearly there is no setting to revert to firefox (i do not care about the search engine I would have liked to use firefox instead of edge because i do not have the interest and time to learn another browser).
As a personal rule I always avoid "messing" with register key third party cleaners tweakers etc; so there is no official setting to revert edge to firefox, for me case closed
