Sorry everyone but I have done everything suggested and it still does not block the website.

This reg file still works for me:

HOSTS File - Add or Remove from Desktop Context Menu - Windows 7 Help Forums

I can edit and save hosts file no problem. I tend to use third party software for hosts file management though.

This website that you want to block - can you post the URL or if not post something similar and show us how it looks in your hosts file?

It should work as long as it is named just HOSTS without any file extension (and assuming you have written it correctly). Open a Command prompt and type the command:

    dir c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts*.*

Your file should be shown as HOSTS with no extension. I suspect you'll find it still has an extension, .txt perhaps.

Oh, so it's Facebook you want to block - that probably explains it. Facebook is well known for being difficult to block .

For a start, try adding fb.com to your HOSTS file. There's more you may need to add here...

    That should look like this:

As Bree says you will never block Facebook with a simple entry in your hosts file.

Well spotted @Callender. There shouldn't be a 'http//' for any site name in a HOSTS file.

Then from the same thread look at the entries in the hosts file in this post:

Some people resort to using third party software. I have not tried this one:

Facebook Blocker Tool : Free Software to Block or Unblock Facebook on Windows | www.SecurityXploded.com

EDIT: Just tried it and it just adds these entries into the hosts file:

    Code:
