    How do you access gmail?
    a. Do you use an email client installed on your PC such as Mail, Thunderbird...
    or
    b. Do you only access it using a web browser such as Edge, Firefox?

If you use it Live from a browser anything you receive send etc. and everything you do to folders in G-mail, stays on Google server and is not downloaded to your device/disk.
If you want them on your computer you'd have use some E-mail client. You can use Windows Mail, just link it to Gmail.

You can do it using the free version of Mailstore home available for download here I have been using it to archive Gmail and all my accounts in MS Outlook 365 to my Pc for several years.

Hi, it depends what you want to do.
    Are you
    a. Looking for Gmail's Archive function? - If so, see below.
    or
    b. Wanting to save a copy of your emails permanently?

If you mean by archive that you want to save a copy then:
If you just have a very few emails you want to save, then you can individually save them to your PC as an eml file, for example.
How to Save a Gmail Email to an EML File

But if you are referring to the Archive function on gmail, which does this:
    Archive or mute Gmail messages

If you want to clean up your inbox without deleting your emails, you can archive or mute them. Your emails are moved to a label called "All Mail."

    • When you archive a message: The message will come back to your inbox when someone replies to it.
    • When you mute a message: Any replies stay out of your inbox. You can search for the conversation if you want to find it again.
Archive or mute Gmail messages - Computer - Gmail Help

E.g. rt click an email, click Archive.

    Archive lots of emails?
To save a LOT of emails on your hard disk, Mailstore (@Sheltieuk above) seems a good option.

Otherwise you'd need to install an email client on your PC and configure it to receive your gmail emails. I would not recommend you use Win 10's Mail app.
