Getting "Performing a TLS handshake to" message when trying to connect

I don't have an answer, but I'm just adding mine to the list for Firefox. I have a site that does the same thing. I get the handshake message at the bottom of the browser, and the loading icon is ongoing, and the page never finishes loading. Sometimes I get lucky, and can close FF, and reopen it, and it works, but it's random. I've cleared cache/cookies for the site, and it still does it now and then.

Yeah, the same here. I did the DNS reset in Windows cmd like they suggested (except that I didn't do factory reset on the router as it works on other computers and I have too many settings there to redo them all over again.) In my case, it's just this one computer that's the issue. Other Win10 desktops that connect via the same WiFi router work just fine with that website.

I didn't post an update earlier because I haven't rebooted this desktop yet. (I know it's silly. But it has 5 or 6 virtual machines running, plus I have like a million tabs open in FF and Chrome.) So I'll try rebooting it at some point in the future and report on the progress.

I'm curious, @bobbyPhoenix, do you have the same result in other browsers? Chrome? Edge?

In my case, the only thing that I've done some time ago is that I changed the DNS on the WiFi router from the ISP's (Comcast) to CloudFlare's 1.1.1.1 which apparently is much faster, more secure and doesn't do as much logging:

But that doesn't seem to affect any other systems. (I have an iPhone, an iPad, an Xbox, and 2 other Win10 desktops using it, all without an issue. Both desktops can by the way load that specific bank website without a problem.) It's just this one system that can't, which really puzzles me!

It's only in Firefox after the latest release. Version 60 worked fine. I have no issues with Chrome.

It seems that there is not much point in changing router DNS. See this post and the next few posts in the thread.

OK, changed DNS setting on the WiFi router to "Get Automatically from ISP". Rebooted. Then did this:

    ipconfig /flushdns
    net stop dnscache
    net start dnscache

but I still can't get that site to load..... Arghhhhhhh! WHY???? It's taking way too long to resolve. What else could be wrong here?

Tried in Chrome. All I'm getting is this:

Getting "Performing a TLS handshake to" message when trying to connect-capture1.png

I don't have many ideas. Maybe check your HOSTS file plus list any browser addons and installed security software.

    EDIT: Re your reply:

If the problem is with your ISP's DNS then that won't help. Try an alternative provider as suggested in instructions posted previously.

Try Google DNS instead of CloudFlare DNS just to test.

Turns out, my Eset AV (currently using ESET Smart Security Premium) is the problem, disabling SSL scanning, now I can browse any site without any TLS handshake issues.

But, eset says "In some cases, the root certificate is not properly imported during the installation of ESET products. This issue is often resolved by disabling and then re-enabling SSL scanning. To do so, please follow the steps below:" I'll do that later and see if the issues is coming back.

Dude, why are you paying for the AV when you have a working free AV in your operating system from the makers of that OS? No one knows their OS better than them. Otherwise, of course some third-party AV needs to act as a man-in-the-middle to read all your TLS internet traffic.

And on top of that they also introduce a much greater vector for an attack surface, in case of an exploited 0-day bug in their AV itself. (Besides just screwing up your system, like you described.) It always boggles my mind that people pay for something that is otherwise absolutely free. One example that comes to mind is one older dude at work that still pays for his email account. I think it's his old msn or live account, but don't quote me on that. When I ask him, why don't you sign up for gmail that is million times better at sorting out spam, also gives you 15 GB+ of space and is free, he thinks that because he is paying for msn service then it's somehow magically better :) I think that's some kind of a logical fallacy there.

In my case, going back to the original issue, the problem with the TLS handshake was happening with both FF and Chrome. I didn't get to the bottom of it though, as I was about the upgrade my computer. So now with a new system the problem is obviously gone. My guess (and it's just an unsubstantiated guess) is that the website itself screwed something up in their CSP or some other TLS restriction setup. If I had more time, I'd review the source of their site to know more.
