This is exactly what I do every time I upgrade firefox.

Will bear it in mind.

It's running really crisply now.

These fixit exercises are a bit of a PIA, but at least they get you under the hood and more familiar with the beast.

My predominantly mechanical engineering mind does however balk somewhat at the idea of fixing problems by re-installing stuff etc - but it's different I guess with software where replacing a large chunk of fucntionality is pretty straightforward...
