    To feed your curiosity:
MS makes 2 different types of installers:
    1. To save download volumes, an online installer is a "skeleton frame" program that will download the necessary files at installation time -- if connected to the Net. It will fail when the PC is disconnected.
    2. An offline installer contains all files needed for installation, and is copied in full to your drive. You can then install even if you're offline at that time.
    Thanks for that.
By way of an update the problem appears to be solved. It was suggested that I check in my program folder because even though I was being told that the program hadn't been installed maybe it had been. When I checked it was indeed there. I was simply taking the word of the installation program that it had failed especially when it threw up the error code. I now have it running on Windows 10 quite happily, I've set up and synced three of my four email accounts. For some reason I can't get the fourth one to work and I'll have to as it's my main account. I've checked it three times and everything seems to be correct so I think I'll delete that one and try to set it up again from scratch. Thanks everyone for the help and if anyone else is getting a didn't install message check your program folder!

Oh no. Don't tell me I'm also going to have problems installing this New Framework thing!!!
I am 70 and I find the Mail App that comes with windows 10 a lot better than the one you are on about. I have 2 windows mail accounts and yahoo and gmail and they are all installed and working as good as gold

I'm probably just more of a rebel. I don't like it when companies produce a perfectly good product and then once people have got used to it stop supporting it and force them to use something else. But then that's Microsoft all over. I've used every form of Windows from Microsoft Windows and DOS 6 and I'm still waiting for them to get it right!

@Gozoman do you still have access to your previous OS and installation of Windows Live Mail?

If you do, close both the old and new Windows Live Mail. Show hidden folders on both. On your old system go to
C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Mail and copy the Windows Live mail folder. Go to the same location on your new installation and replace the New Windows Live Mail folder with the old one. You should have all your old emails, folders and accounts set up just like the old one. You just need to know the email password for each account.

You may want to save a copy of the new WLM folder before you replace it just in case.

Yes. The Windows Essentials installer does that. I use it to install Movie Maker (there are many packages in the installer). Each individual package may install correctly, but then a subsequent (and hopefully un-needed) package fails to install. It is this error that the installer reports. In the case of Movie Maker, not only does it install and run, by the Start menu links have been added too, despite the installer reporting a failed install.
