I installed Windows 10 on my 6 year old laptop and installed firefox and all other software as well. And it is quicker, not just firefox, but windows in general too. Could this be a hardware or driver issue?

Since you stated that you already reinstalled windows with no difference noticed it can't be a driver issue if you tested firefox before installing or updating anything else.
Seems like i managed to isolate the problem. Disabling my nvidia graphics card had a significant effect. Any ideas on how to proceed next? Currently I have the driver updated through Windows update. Nvidia website has a newer version but I tried the update previously and it caused the same problem.
Not really. I can update my own graphics driver but it involves fully removing the old driver first. I reckon that you should get the driver from your computer manufacturer's website even if it's not he latest driver as it will likely work.
