    Edge performance and Reliability

Today I tried to figure out what is causing Edge to freeze a couple of minutes after first launch, for 1-2 minutes, before becoming responsive again. (Microsoft Edge Manager running at 100% on 1 core)

What I did, was completely disabling Cortana via reg edit. (since this can not be done in Settings anymore, after Cortana has been activated).

To my surprise, the 2 minute freeze is completely gone now.

Here is what I did in the registry:

    1. Navigate to:
    Code:
    Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Search
    2. Add the following Key:
    Code:
    AllowCortana: as REG_DWORD(32-bit)
    3. Put the value as HEX:
    Code:
    0x00000000
    (0x00000001 enables Cortana again)
    4. Reboot computer ,for settings to take effect.

    Voila! Issue completely gone!

For convenience I attached REG files for enabling and disabling Cortana:
    Cortana_DISABLE.reg
    Cortana_ENABLE.reg

Toni, did you try turning it off, in Edge's advanced settings first?

I just turned it off and browsed a bit, thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
No more waiting to/for a response.

Cliff, I killed Cortana completely, since I find it useless. Cortana does not help me be more productive in any way, it is quite the opposite and it slows everything down.

Since I killed Cortana, I don't even have that button in Edge Privacy section anymore. :)

It's not that I find it useless, I just ALWAYS forget to use it
(muscle memory, I either search using the Windows key, or do it from File Explorer, automatically.

...same here, and that is why I finally decided Cortana is useless for me. I never use that feature.

    Actually...

Next time you hit the WinKey and type something to search for, pause for a moment before clicking on the search result and click the 'hamburger' settings icon top left...

...guess who found it for you :)

All I need to find via START is my apps/tools (usually I even press WIN+R and type what I need my computer to launch or do)...the rest I know where is when needed. If I need information I am already searching with Google using Chrome. Cortana finds squat (at least for my search criteria).

The other day I was looking through my Mobile App usage (specifically browser usage). And guess what! I use Edge for Android over 90% of the time.

That is how good and reliable Edge is at the moment. Edge works equally well for me on my PC, after I removed Cortana integration from it. :)

Edge still has hope! Just a minor UI fix and it would be perfect.
