don't really feel confident with this, do I install all?
Well start with codecs and then directx, the rest should not really matter.

But you can try to disable hardware acceleration first.

Thank you, I have VLC however ... don't really want to download every video I may want to watch.
Did you know that VLC can play videos streamed direct from YouTube? There's no need to download first. Just try to watch the video on YouTube then copy its url, it looks like this:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbCdEfG1234

In VLC, use: Media > Open Network Stream... (keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+N), paste the url there and click the Play button.

Thank you everyone!! I've just managed to turn off hardware acceleration (tried once before but failed?), just ran a couple of my youtube videos in chrome and they worked .
Need to cook tea now but will try farce book and more later before pressing 'resolved' button.

Everything seems fine now though I struggle to understand why it started in the first place as I hadn't changed anything, anyway thank you to everyone who tried assisting.

You may not have changed anything, but windows update may have. As you fixed it by turning off hardware acceleration, my guess is that you had just had a video driver update.
