Windows v1709 and cookie handling changed?

    Hello,

In the past I have always used CCleaner to clean my IE 11 and Edge cookies and have noticed lately that after using CCleaner I was still signed into sites that I should no longer have been signed into. So I checked the cookie deletion results log and noticed that all the cookie files that CCleaner used to detect are no longer found, just a deprecated cookie. I can still delete the cookies using the default Internet Options method but any third-party cleaning app like Glary utilities or the aforesaid CCleaner no longer work. The same goes for Edge cookies as well.

Before anyone mentions it: 1. I do not have any cookies set to keep in CCleaner. 2. Sync settings in Windows is turned off.

I have used the shell:cookies command to open up INetCookies with "Hide operating system files" unchecked and there are only three folders, DNTException, Low and PrivacIE and a container.dat file. No cookie .txt files anywhere.

I don't know whether this is some malfunction affecting just my PC or if this has anything to do with the Fall Creator's update.

Has v1709 changed how cookies are handled now?

The sites required you to sign in with a user name and password ? Or just sites you have visited ? Also, do the sites have an option to check "Keep Me Signed In" ? (which can be unchecked)

My experience (CCleaner) has been that some sites, especially media sites, have stubborn cookies because you are only permitted to view a certain number of free pages without registering. Those sometimes require manual deletion. Could that be your case ?

Do you have the latest CCleaner ? A new release was issued this week.

Yes, something changed with the Fall Creator's Update (v1709) and CCleaner started showing the deprecated.cookie file with each run. I also had 30 plus folders with INetCookies in their path show up twice. They were all empty and the deprecated.cookie file states it is no longer used. This was all before the latest CCleaner update and the new version still deletes the deprecated.cookie file. I added an include in CCleaner to delete any folder or file with "INetCookie" in the path. CCleaner now deletes the deprecated.cookie file and the INetCookie/container.dat file with each run. The container.dat file is always empty. So far, there have been no issues with this method. Something in v1709 changed with the way these files/folders are handled, but I have no clue as to what, nor why.

On both types of sites, ones that you sign in on that I haven't checked "Keep me signed in" and sites that I never sign in on like youtube. For example, regardless of whether a person is signed in on or not youtube will recommend similar videos on the right based on my viewing of a certain band. After cleaning with CCleaner I noticed that these bands were still being recommended. Only by deleting cookies using the Windows Internet Options would all similar recommendations be gone.

I know it's not a big deal as Window options took care of it, but it was just handy having CCleaner do all that for me. I am using the latest CCleaner.

Have you found then that setting CCleaner to delete container.dat file has worked then? I'll have to try it out.

Sort of. The system still creates both files as soon as they are deleted. Run CCleaner repeatedly, and it will have deleted new instances of these two files. Won't be surprised if these files disappear in subsequent updates.

Try to terminate "dllhost.exe" (Edge process) before using CCleaner.

    Code:
    taskkill /f /im dllhost.exe
    start "" "%ProgramFiles%\CCleaner\CCleaner64.exe" /AUTO

I've just tried this but CCleaner still didn't delete the Edge cookie.
