Go for it. Skylakes(and Kaby too) will just shut down before they fry.
But it might be better doing this with software overclocking, as from a cold boot(if the system BSODs or CPU shuts down), from what I've read, you can get a voltage spike much higher than your set Vcore, and that can be dangerous.
You might not be able to get back into BIOS unless you clear the CMOS then, and reset your current BIOS settings to it's default(OK if you saved your OC profiles). this happened to me.

Just plain restarting keeps an electrical load on OC capable motherboards, so there is no voltage spikes(from the capacitors I believe).

I use asus overclocking tool just for that reason.

No, they might Fry, be very careful. That kind of voltage require extreme cooling
It's just to exciting not to try lol.

A good friend of mine tried that too. The spike of current killed his cpu. The choice is yours but I would hate for you to lose your CPU. Personally, unless I was using LN2 I would not try such a high voltage

Your absolutely correct Dude but the temptation is just to great.

Looks as if it all goes up in smoke I will get a 7700k

@worf105, I've known several people who have fried their CPU trying what you are trying. It can and has been done. Theory is fine, but actual practice can be quite different.

Very wise words writing so I will take your warnings. I wait until I upgrade my system to coffee lake or ryzen in the future and then fry this chip. Cheers all

What temps(package temp is the actual temperature of the inside of the CPU not CPU temp) are you getting with your over 5GHz OC's?

CPU Temperature is the temp of the socket,
the package temperature is the core temperatures so you should pay attention to the package temperatures.

I'm worried about worf too. Maybe we should have paulpicks 21 have a conversation with him . Or maybe he's looking for a reason for a cpu upgrade.

PS: Oh, I just noticed that is exactly what he is doing - coffee lake or Ryzan.

I agree, Hippsie. Wild and crazy people, especially in the OC leaderboard thread.

Worf should do his ocing at Doorules place, who is likely yet again digging himself out of another 40CM snow storm.
