    Lost file in File History

Had to re-install Windows 10. Before doing this I backed up my computer using the Windows File History. After re-installing Windows 10 I am able to find all of my files, except one. It was the only file I had pinned to always show up as a recently used file. Are pinned files stored in a different file location than other Word documents? Also, is there a way to search on an external drive for the file contents? I know some of the unique words in the file, but maybe forgot the file name.

I wouldn't rely on File History. You need a reliable & regular full system & user file backup strategy. Many on this forum (including me) using the excellent program Macrium Reflect (free version available).

You can search for file contents but you need to set the indexing options to do this and rebuild the index. See http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-ma...file-contents/

You could also just check the Always search file names and contents box under Folder Options / Search e.g.

    Thanks Steve C.
I may have to look into Macrium Reflect.
I did a search on my computer and my external drive after checking "Always search...", but nothing came up.
Do you think I should do the indexing option you mentioned?

Yes, you could reindex the drive , particularly if it is removable. Also, check the indexing on drive contents is allowed - see screenshot.

Thanks for your help Steve C.
I guess that file is lot forever. I did the indexing and the search. I was able to search the text within the files. I looked at a lot of files but never saw the text I was looking for. Turns out there was a second missing file. There may be more I haven't noticed yet.
Before I do my next back-up I will look into Macrium Reflect.
    Thanks again for your help.
