I used to work as a flight instructor. Single engine land and sea, multi engine land and sea, instrument and aerobatics. Got my multi engine sea rating in a twin Republic Seabee when a buddy owned a Grumman Albatros. He was going to hire me to fly it in the Marshall Islands but the deal never panned out, but I got a chance to get a few hours in it - what a beast. Nowadays the only flying is radio control, my latest is a Super Chipmunk.
I just burned the Reflect rescue media to a USB flash drive. I notice in "other tasks" in the menu that I can add recovery boot menu option saying something about being able to start Windows PE without a recovery CD. I thought the whole purpose of the recovery media was to boot the machine, so should I ignore that option or what?
That option offers a quick way to restore a backup in case of a software failure vice a hardware failure. Say the latest Windows 10 update leaves your computer on the constantly spinning dots. You can use the boot menu option to boot into a Macrium Rescue boot.wim file stored on your hard drive and then restore an operable image.
It's like using Windows built-in rescue environment instead of booting to a Windows installation USB flash drive or DVD.
So if I am using this rescue media just in case of hard drive failure, then I do not need to worry about adding that in, correct???
You say it is convenient, but I guess I don't understand the function. With the standard rescue flash drive I created, I could boot a new hard drive, then restore my image. So what exactly does this "recovery boot menu option" do? And where does it get stored - on the flash drive or the external drive with the image, on my PC hard drive, or where???
It's on the hard drive. It's available as an option when you power on or restart your computer, in the Boot Menu. If you only have one OS installed on your machine, you've probably never seen the Boot Menu. For now, just ignore it. Important thing is the Rescue Thumb. The Boot Menu option can be added at any time.
Before trying to boot from the flash as a test, I saw this article from the Macrium site. Even though recovery flash seemed to create okay, this article has me wondering. The process they describe sounds a little complex for me, do I have to do this or not. I am using a SanDisk Cruzer Glide 8GB USB flash drive. And like I said, the process seemed to work, it said that the media was created, and I can see lots of files on the flash drive.
