Sorry for the delay in replying Caledon but I have always had Cortana turned OFF so couldn't follow your instructions quickly

While I was waiting I got a warning from Windows that an Update was outstanding so I let it attempt another Update.

    It too, failed at 26%

So I switched ON Cortana and tried to follow your instructions. My responses (from Cortana) were different from yours but I cleared out the Update and reloaded from scratch. Update 1607 redownloaded and scheduled a restart but I told it to restart NOW....

It ran again and failed again at (you guessed it) 26%

The further annoying thing is has been applied before successfully before my Image Restore. And it applied correctly on my laptop but has now failed four times on my (this) desktop....

    Any other suggestions? :?

Ouch. Wish you had come back. Troubleshooting is part of control panel.

Okay if I understand you correctly you have access to your data and it is safe, correct? If the answer is yes and you can access from another machine, which is something your need to be able to do then I would try the an in-place upgrade repair.

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Failing that, and given all the things you've done I would go nuclear, clean install.

Before I did either of these I would have an Image so I could get back to where I am now. This over and above the data access question above.
