    Backup Advice, I'm Confused

Windows includes a number of backup tools. Onedrive and to an external hard drive. I've notice some go to OneDriveand others to my external hard drive. Should I use both types of back ups or just one? With earlier PC's everything was backed up to my external hard drive. If I choose to use only my external drive is there a way to change Onedrive settings? Basically , I'm confused. Our PC is for causal home use.

    Thanks

One drive only backs up anything you put in that folder Google drive is the same both these are the best backup as it's safe on the cloud backup to a great and it can break get dropped stolen etc so cloud is safer and does it all for you

You need to consider doing full system backups to a removable drive which can be stored in a safe location. Most people on this forum recommend the excellent program Macrium Reflect Free.

I create a system image as well as a Macrium backup weekly. I have used the system image from Windows many times without any problems. Macrium is more "flexible" than the Windows version. Macrium allows you to copy individual files, whereas Windows re-images the entire C drive. Hope this helps ...

Only the paid version of Macrium does file backups but the free version is great for imaging.

Don't rely on OneDrive as a backup. If something is deleted or encrypted (ransomware) on your local OneDrive folder that is immediately reflected in the cloud.

    Thank you for the advice.

Should I just use the free copy of Macrium and nothing else?
Should I use Macrium in cognition with my external hard drive?
Should I reroute all files for going to onedrive to one of above setups?

Honestly, when my previous pc crashed and burned nothing on my external hard drive could be retrieved. I even went the route of using paid for utilities to retrieve my photos from the external hard drive but that did not work out. That application required me to thumbnail review through 100,000 images of which about 95% were not true photos. Plus that app left its operational files all over the place. Took quite some time to fine and delete them.

    Thanks

    This is what I do.
Where possible separate your data from the OS onto a different drive / partition.

Macrium Reflect for system images. The free version is all you need.

    FreeFileSync for File backups. http://www.freefilesync.org/

I made a video tutorial of FreeFileSync four years ago. It slightly different now but it should give you the idea.
