I'd like to be sure about that- this article says

RollBack Rx: Freeware That Saves Your Bacon - PCMag UK

Would like to find a manual or something definitive...
That's a good point...I had forgotten about that. You'd have to remember whatever you worked on after taking a snapshot & before you restored (Of course, you'd have to do that anyhow or you wouldn't know what data files to restore). It would be just as easy to first copy them to an external drive, restore, & then copy them back. I suppose a sync program could do that automatically.

I did find a manual for their pro version (they don't have it for the free version) at https://www.horizondatasys.com/downl...User_Guide.pdf, which says on p.14 "* Rollback system to a snapshot will reset everything on the hard drive to the time of the snapshot. To keep the latest user data created after the snapshot, you can select files or folders to transfer to the restoring snapshot, so your data will remain unchanged even after rolling back to another snapshot. To exclude files from being changed by a roll-back, click on the Exclusion button."

I don't know if those features are available in the free version.

    Hello Phrab,
    From Simon((FastEddy)

I use a synchronising program (SyncBackFree) to send my documents to a USB Flash drive, as well as update other site on my network. It runs from profiles and it is easy to set-up once you have worked out the routine. It takes seconds to use.

I recommend doing full system images on an external hard drive because I use it often. RollBack Rx Home doesn't use the Windows system protection integral software, so if you have to recover with an installation disk you will find not much works: no troubleshooter, restore points or contribution from sfc /scannow running from Safe Mode with command prompt. All you will have available is a re-image from a system image on the ExtHDD. If you have a program not respond or halt and you power OFF-ON and lose a driver you will be stuck. It is a possibility that RollBack RX Home may do this because it seems to be activated at boot (I had PuranDefrag halt at 14% completed and I had to do a re-image because I had to power cycle OFF-ON) RollBack RX Home may complicate the re-boot; time will tell.

My understanding is that there was an earlier program: Norton Go Back. There may be other suitable software out there.

    Good hunting.

Thanks for the suggestion. I took a look on their forum & they don't support Windows XP (my 2nd machine). However, one user said they ran it in compatibility mode & it worked. The other option that I'm looking at is FreeFileSync https://freefilesync.org/faq.php#different-after-sync , which supports XP & has a user manual & forum.

I think it unofficially supports XP. I use it on my XP VM.

System Restore, RPC failure and Windows Update failures

    Hello Phrab, From Simon (FastEddy)

If your CPU is likely to be slow (as my Pentium4 single core may be) and you don't want to use a dual core or quad but still need to work on these projects you might find the following of use.

RollBackRX Home was slow in the Dell GX620 with a Pentium4. It resolved to lightening fast by:

    1) Changing the Anti-virus from Avira Anti-virus Free to Kaspersky Free Anti-virus, which is a lighter package.
    2) Changing the defragmenter from SmartDefrag6, Defraggler and PuranDefrag to Auslogics Disk Defrag which has an effective Setting for clearing temporary files, of which I can accumulate 12,000 or more.
    3) Running cmd^ sfc /scannow to repair corrupted files.

Good luck with the projects... Windows Update KB4457128 and KB 4464128 is a plague on all our houses.

    Simon.

    Hello glivo,
Windows 10 Pro version 1803 32 bit problems may be deeper. I looked into "WMI Reading Error 1803", recently.

I looked at Horizon DataSys product (RollBack RX Home) which is a suitable third party alternative to System Restore. It would take snapshots but not rollback. Similarly "Speccy" would not Run.

It took a while but I followed a thread in Tweak.com Windows Repair and found that a registry ImagePath was at fault:

    HHEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winmgmt\ImagePath

    Change %systemroot%\system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs -p

    To %systemroot%\system32\svchost.exe -k winmgmt

That is a Windows 7 thread, so I am guessing that these faults (RPC, programs not running and system restore failings) are deeper imbedded in Windows 10 Pro 32-bit software and may not be easily resolved. The third-party software producers have more leverage, as I found a while back when I contacted Piriform. Of the million or so users I was the only one to contact them.

So: possibly, tell the third-party as well as us.

    Good luck with the troubleshooting.
