Must admit I have not used System Restore for some time, but I am constantly creating restore points in case I need one...When I had issues I just restored in 'Safe Mode' and that worked fine...But I grab a mirror image every 4 to 5 weeks.
I will be checking it out as I am going to a friends over the weekend, as his System Restore is not working.

    Windows 10 v 1803 AppxStaging still around

    Hello Michele,

I can confirm that Windows 10 v 1803 is still failing with error code 0x80070005 (AppxStaging - access denied).

I had a couple of sporadic clean installations that worked initially. Lots of work ripping-out AppData and playing with permissions to no effect.

If you are stuck, there is a snapshot based (not BackUp) freeware on the Internet. Try: RollBack Rx Home from Horizons DataSys Corporation. It does the same job as Windows System Restore but better. Macrium Reflect is super for an ExtHDD system Image though.

Good luck with that. Hello Bree and all who know me.

    Hey SimonFastEddy,

Yep, people usually only see the 0x80070005 with 3rd party AV/Firewall, but they are seeing it with just Windows Defender now. Only workaround I know of for the 0x80070005 with Windows Defender only ... is to run System Restore in Safe Mode.

I didn't know the 0x80070091 error was back

At least, the good news is that Microsoft is aware of this bug as of 30 June. The when has not yet been decided. All I know is that Microsoft is aware of System Restore still not working. Yes, I have only Windows Defender but I got this error several times.

    Hello SoFine409,

Nice to see that you are still around. This is quite an old thread that dealt with 0x80070091. Bree opened up a newer thread looking at RPC Failure server unavailable where the the System Image (prepared using Windows integral software) fails on the Windows 10 version 1803 (32 bit only affected), which is the current interest. System Images work when prepared using Macrium Reflect; the 64-bit version is not yet affected. So - the community has missed the current error 0x80070005 which in the past was caused by a Third-party anti-virus being enabled during the restore process.

There are new fixes being reported on the Internet but they mainly cover 0x80070005 affecting Windows Update.

I had a play with the fixes on: 0x80070005 – Fix for Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, 10... one wet and miserable afternoon but 0x80070005 has changed it's nature and doesn't shift. I seem to recall having a crack at Restore in Safe Mode but it caused problems. I looked at permissions and deleted everything in AppData up to the language pack. I got rid of that as well but the computer wouldn't boot (blue doughnut flashing) so I had to do a clean installation. With the Ethernet connector pulled-out during installation, you might get an installation that works but it isn't for long.

So - It's RollBack Rx Home third-party software for me until a Microsoft fix is distributed. BUT then again why should Microsoft want to do that when there is a better software package available? Fixing System Restore doesn't make commercial sense.

I am off down the beach for some late summer sun.

Never heard of this software until you mentioned it. I read reviews & it seems pretty good. Do you have the free or paid version? Either way, why would you use System Restore, if this works better?

    Hello Phrab,

Nice to meet you on the Forum. I am using the freeware offering of RollBack Rx Home. It works OK. It took ages finding RollBack Rx Home and I really just stumbled over it when I Googled one of the prolific BackUp sites that also listed other sites that interest was being shown in.

Each snapshot is about 1 GB and are fast to do. If you support it with a good system image software (Macrium Reflect seems to be immune to Microsoft bugs and AOMEI BackUpper I have also tried and it works OK) you should be free of these problems. That will give you the data safety margin you need if you want to explore some of the Internet fixes on offer: most don't work.

    Just good luck really.

Have fun with it - remember KISS. Keep it simple stupid.

Thank you for the information. I use Macrium Reflect daily (although they had a bug several months ago which created corrupt backup files...I restored from one & it took days to restore everything from another computer). I also have Acronis True Image, which has a Try & Decide feature. You can start it & test anything you want & discard all changes later. However, I only keep Try & Decide running for no more than an hour because any changes that you want to keep will also be lost.

If I understand RollBack, it will only restore system files & the registry.

I'd like to be sure about that- this article says
But again, what about data files you've created or edited since that time? RollBack Rx lets you search for them by file name, wildcard, or location—or, in a downright mind-blowing advantage over System Restore, mount a snapshot as a virtual drive in Explorer. It's like opening a wormhole between snapshots so you can reach forward, grab Tuesday's documents, and add them to Monday's system.

Would like to find a manual or something definitive...

This doesn't seem to make it clear:
    http://www.horizondatasys.com/downlo...User_Guide.pdf

It does point out it's incompatible with dual booting - I wonder what happens if upgrading? I seem to recall when I looked at it a very long time back it had to be uninstalled.
