    SimonFastEddy thanks glivo for insight.

I had it go that way last night. Totally new Custom install of Windows 10 32 bit Pro.....from a start with Windows 7... I changed from Home to Pro with Tom Hodson's software (installation disc and product key) from ebay. Frustrating.

I was wondering if it was Windows Defender. Apparently not then....

    Brittle isn't it!

So it's still broken then... Thanks for checking.

System restore is a joke. What is the point now that it is broken. My system was ruining sluggish and sfc /scanow would not even run anymore when I went on a disable services spree so I ran system restore and it failed. I decided to just do a in-place upgrade which keeps all files and now my PC is running fast again as it replaced any corrupted files. Also sfc /scannow works too. All my programs also work. I just had to rerun the Windows Update Mini Tool to hide that horrible Realtek audio driver again.

So I am not going to rely on System Restore instead just do a in-place upgrade whenever I have issues. I use to do this all the time but I never decided to keep my files so reinstalling and configuring everything was a pain.

I rely on restoring a recent system image for undoing my Regedit 'sprees' - that and regular backups of user data should be regarded as an essential precaution. Macrium Reflect is the recommendation of many on this Forum, but I use the (allegedly less reliable) built-in Windows system imaging.

In-place upgrade might fix it. You have to download the media creation tool which can take over a hour to update and install. It is worth a shot but of course make sure you backup your data first.

SimonFastEddy caught in a whirlpool of misadventure....someone at Microsoft throw me a line or canoe please.

Well I am on a Macrium Reflect learning curve at last....I've even invented my own ink (running out of scrap paper) for a Fine Line Pen (1.5 : 1) ratio of 50 year-old vintage Quink to liquid laundry detergent. Fills the time between System Images! Fill the pen with the printer ink refilling syringe. If you get it on your fingers don't get it on your eye or you will be forever being asked: Who thumped you?

AppxStaging not going as well..Tried all the methods in "How to Fix System Restore Error Code 0x80070091 on Windows 10". Cleaning the WindowsApps folder went really well. Seeemple!

I want to ask a question...consulting inky squiggles: ReimageRepair found malware in the Windowsapps folder:

    C:\program files\windowsapps\microsoft.windowsstore_11701.1001.79_x86_8wekyb3_HIDDENEXT/crypted

I fould three items of similar but renaming the one below didn't resolve AppxStaging.
    C:\program files\windowsapps\microsoft.windowsstore_11701.1001.79_x86_8wekyb3

What IF....Windows Defender doesn't know about It? It's probably a marketing tool..there is a TR/Crypt.XPACK.Gen2 in VLC Media Player which I know about.

Any thoughts? Blessed witches from Simon

Well even if you fixed your System Restore by renaming the WindowsApps folder, chances are it is now broken again due to the March Update that has just pushed out.

Instead of MS fixing this problem, they may have actually re-broken it for those who fixed it themselves.

Edit: This morning's update did not break my System Restore. It continues to work after I removed / renamed WindowsApps folder a couple of weeks ago.

There are reports that it is not working for some people again after the update however I can't confirm this.

Hello everyone! From SimonFastEddy....I have something to work on....I need you wizards....

I have a Dell Optiplex 760 refurbished and purchased in January 2017. The installation from what would've been an Upgraded machine began on the 29th January 2017. I had success with System Restores early in the installation. The machine has been mostly OFF since then, being the safety net.

Today 17th March 2017 I tested two new restore points. These were succesful (I had expected 0x80070091) BUT I was messaged with I couldn't be Signed-in and was given a Temporary Account. Head spinning in fury. Blasted User Account messed-up again by Microsoft.

    Task sequence:

    17th March 2017

Set two restore points and tested these.

    Outcome:
    Restore successful BUT

1 Couldn't sign me into my account and was placed on a temporary account.
2 OneDrive needed to be updated. Start-up, lock screen says “Preparing Windows”; not the usual "Welcome". Ominous!

    3 Do a restore undo
    4 Outcome Failed
    5 Look to do aSystem Image regression 2B) 760 W10 v 1607 Pro64U Data Working Final
6 Plugged-in the Toshiba. No images shown for that PC. It appears to have lost a record of these Dell 760 images! Cancelled the system image restore. Blue screened.

    7 Ctrl-Alt-Delete and ESC failed...Powered off a few times

Outcome all back working..Start-up Lock Screen shows “Welcome” no “Preparing Windows” message straight into normal start-up.

    Network working again. All OK.

Head spinning in fury. I just killed the bloody Microsoft.....be brutal..give it a slap; put the monster back into it's cage somehow. Back on duty again.

Someone tell me what M$ has messed with please.

    From SimonFastEddy.
