    Backup Software - Win 10

I have been using a Seagate Free Agent Desk external HD (1TB) for the purpose of backing up my computer especially files, photos, email etc. However Win 10 made the external HD non compatible and Seagate is not offering any new firmware to make is work.
I lieu of throwing the HD in the garbage I have been trying to download a free backup software (ie; Amolei Backupper, Go-Sync etc.) and they will not download? Keep getting a partial only and an error stating the .exe cannot be downloaded? In the "Download" folder the file indicates that it is partial and not even close to size indicated on publisher's website. I have tried several times and still no success!
Can anyone shed some light on this as to why the .exe will not download? Is there an alternative other than buying yet another external HD for this purpose. The Seagate worked great until Win 10 executed it!

Would appreciate any help I ca get on this.

    Thanking you in advance.

Hi, what sort of backup you wish to do determines your choice of program. (Sorry, obsolete metaphor of grandmother and sucking eggs.. but anyway).

Disk imaging as I guess you know is invaluable. I've used Aomei Backupper- I have the Pro version.. for a quite a while, but have given up on it - the current version will not create a bootable disk properly. I've tried using the latest version to create an updated iso and burn that with a separate program- no go. Used to be ok. It has other bugs in certain particular circumstances and the error msgs are sometimes very obscure for simple things, and extremely 'foreign' sometimes (Chinese English - bad Chinglish).

Much more robust but a less straightforward GUI and highly recommended here is Macrium Reflect (free). This properly packages the partition set for Windows into an image, whereas Aomei didn't seem to.

If, however, you want a means of also backing up files and folders on the fly, try Windows File History.

I'm assuming your problem with your external disk is not related to downloading exe files.
As to why that's happening, I've no idea, sorry. See if you can download Macrium.
Try downloading the same thing from different sites - e.g. Softpedia, Major Geeks, Filehippo...
    Try a different browser.

Run a test on your internet...

Hopefully someone who has used Seagate will comment on that. I typically use Toshiba disks, and whilst problems with Seagate and Western Digital disks seem common, I can't recall one with Toshiba. MS is said to be working on fixes for problems with the anniversary build (I assume it hasn't worked since that) so you may be lucky if you wait.

    Thanks for the reply!

In response to that statement that is what I have been using however Win 10 no longer recognises the Seagate HD! That is what is causing this problem in the first place.

Also Macrum Reflect is more of an imaging program is it not? All I am looking for is a software that I can schedule to back up my files, photos etc.

Thanks again for you reply...much appreciated.

There are plenty of those around... just search- and by the way, everyone is strongly recommended to use disk imaging to give you quick recovery from
    - ransomware
    - user error
    - an unbootable PC
    - uncorrectable problems
    - a failed disk
    without technical support.

Disk images can also be used in moving to a new PC in a couple of different ways.
My comments on Aomei related to using it for disk imaging, but for example, it can't even give a clear message if the backup destination is missing (a USB disk in my case).

Whatever you use, you will need some form of external storage - whether it be networked, cloud, or connected by USB.

Hey there everyone thanks for the info as it is much appreciated. Looks like the only way I am going to be able to download any of these programs is through Chrome. Cannot download through MS Edge as it keeps giving an error that the .exe file cannot be downloaded?
Wondering if MS is purposely doing this to stop the use of third party software?

Interesting.. I tried downloading Aomei Backupper in Edge- which I've never used for downloading before. It told me the signature was corrupt or invalid.

Despite that I ran the file. To the extent I did so (install path) it ran with no problems.

    That was from CNET.

Downloading from Aomeitech - same thing.

Suggests the CRC check fails, but the content is bad, or it's encoded to a different standard or..

I tried downloading Winrar.exe from Softpedia with Edge - no problem.

It is hard to find anything relevant- no results for that error message.
