Sorry, when I deleted Macrium, I chose the option to delete everything. Were I to guess, Macrium might have failed 18Aug, but at any rate, I believe that the Escort drivers were not used until the day of my successful USB cable replacement.
Ah that's a shame. I don't think it matters when you first used the cable; if there was a clash with Macrium it would have happened the first time you used Macrium after the drivers were installed, whether or not they'd seen active use by that point.

CCleaner run against the Registry. A number of entries found; a quick scan of them pointed to programs now removed, etc.

    Hi,

Is Fast On turned off yet?

If not then it's like running around in circles most of the time. Like writing calligraphy on a pillow....
Other then that, does Event Viewer throw up errors complaining about CAPI2 ?

I'd love to see this solved first. Repair installs are so cowardly MS's easy way out..............

    Good work everyone.

    Cheers guys,

With the various disabled/removed programs, I cannot, for reasons unknown, highlight more than a few lines, so I cannot cut down the length of your quote, add my responses, start another quote, and so. Therefore I am going to put all my comments here.

    1. I have now removed the Dell Support Assist and disabled the DataVault service, so all things to be deleted have been deleted/disabled.
    Good, thanks.

    2. Trekker: Sorry, the Boers got there first.

    3. Chkdsk results were rather interesting. After I ran the boot chkdsk, just to be sure, I again ran the read-only version, which still showed an error with the Volume Bitmap, an error that, among other things, pointed to VSS.
    That's interesting.

    Not Myself said:
    4. I then went into a clean boot and ran Macrium. Trying to back up the C drive, it quickly Failed to create Volume Snapshot, (0x80004270F).
Even more interesting, as that is a new error code, which comes up empty in a Google search (except, of course, for this thread).

    Not Myself said:
5 I rebooted to a normal configuration, and tried read-only chkdsk once again; this time, it reported no errors.

    6. Opened an Admin Command Prompt, and ran the first step of Option 3 of the RP Removal tutorial, as that seemed to be the quickest way to do this; the command returned "No items found that satisfy the query," so I stopped and wrote this.
Okay. So, I don't think this is "space" related, and if there are any restore points left anywhere, they are corrupted enough that they can't be found by the OS.

7.. Yes, WD drive is disconnected, and no, I have not yet run Cleaner against the Registry, waiting to remove the recalcitrant Dell entry. I will do that after posting this, logging off and disabling my wifi connection (I keep doing that for safety, as it is so easy to do.)

I hope I've covered all points.
    Yes, thank you very much!

I think we are ready for the repair install. Are you ready? We need to allow approximately 2 hours.

    Cheers guys,
    Hi fdegrove.
Yes, Fast Startup has been turned off.
I'd love to see it repaired too, but it seems the only option is repair install. :)

I was thinking this may even have been a semaphore issue/timeout, and this exercise would have resolved that (I think), but alas, it hasn't.

I am ready, but it will have to be tomorrow; It is 1748 local, I just started cooking dinner, I've not even read one of our two morning newspapers, and whatever silly reasons or lack thereof shall have to suffice.

To coordinate, what time zone are you in (we are MDT,) and what local time would be okay for you? I can probably figure out what time that would be here, and we can try to link up and proceed from that information.

I'm in the Eastern time zone, so 2 hours ahead of you, I think. Any time should be fine tomorrow - just not too early, as I need several cups of coffee to get the brain cells working in the morning!

Wow. This is a long thread with so many pages and I admit I did not read everything. However, If you have not tried what I post below then you might want to try to get the restore point working first.
Assuming that you've already ran CHKDSK, SFC, DISM

    1. If System Restore is On, turn it off.
    2. Open Device Manager: View->Show hidden files
    3. Look for any entry containing: "Volume Shadow Copy". If there is/are then right click and uninstall them all.
    4. Turn on System Restore and try to create one. If suceeded, try Macrium again. If not, continue step 5.
    5. The "System Volume Information" folder where Restore point(s) stored might be corrupted, you will need to delete it then reboot, Windows will re-create this folder. The only way to delete this folder is to boot from Linux. You can use UBUNTU, Linux Mint etc... (Google Search). Create a bootable USB then boot from it then delete the folder. Reboot and try again.

Although I went to college in Massachusetts, taught and coached in MA, among other "Back East" connections, I have never heard of the EDT time zone. Would 10 AM your time work for you?

"Back East"? That is a common way of referring to anything east of CO/NM, etc.

Possible connection: The last Macrium backup on the Seagate is dated 19Aug., the Escort software install is dated 20Aug. As I wrote earlier, I would be rather surprised were the Escort Detector Tools be defective, simply because I suspect (don't know, just sense) that the installed base of that software is rather large; nonetheless, the possibility exists.

    Hi topguncp,
    Yes, we've done the sfc/dism/chkdsk.
We have not tried your 5 steps though.
    @Not Myself
Let's give it a go, shall we?

You could also boot from Kyhi's Rescue Media, which will boot you to a mini-windows-desktop, where you can use File Explorer to find the folder and delete it (Step #5):
    Win10586PESE_x64 ISO v160707
Windows 10 Recovery Tools - Bootable Rescue Disk - Windows 10 Forums

(The System Volume Information folder will be found on the root of C:\.)

It would also be interesting to see if the Escort Drivers show in Device Manager; if any Events are reported for those drivers, and perhaps a screenshot or two of what is found. Honestly, I'm with you, and can't imagine that they would be the cause of this, but since the timing is so close, it wouldn't hurt to check. May want to even try uninstalling the software, or at least disabling the drivers, to see if System Restore/Macrium start working again.

It's just about 10am here, and I am on cup #3, so any time you're ready...:)

As the German Butcher said, "Gluten Morgen."

There, that taken care of, here is screen shot of the hidden devices:

    Macrium Reflect Backup Failures-shadow_copies.jpg

I have no idea what, if anything, to do with this. I don't understand your directions about deleting the folder; is that the folder which has the shadow copies? Then you say that the System Volume Information Folder is in the root of C:\; again, I need to ask what that is.

A short while later: Am I correct that I should download the program in your link. create a bootable disk, run the program, and use its Step 5?

Device Manager does show the Escort Drivers; the property sheet for my detector correctly shows that it is not connected. Continuing with my questions, how would I disable the driver(s)?
