I just tried that but I don't know how to see what accounts I have now! If I go to User Accounts I only see my 'usual one, yey earlier I did add another one with an email address as the user name, now I don't see it!

Following on from Cliff's point that the problem was going to be the password on my local account I had a rummage and found a password that wasn't associated with anything so I thought, may as well try it and it worked, so that was the problem all along. I can only assume I was having a bad day a while ago with passwords/Microsoft that got me into a bind. Whatever.

I would like to know though how to see all the accounts I have now. I only see the one at the moment but I know I created another one as Cliff suggested and I also followed altae's suggestion about activating the hidden admin account, so I should have three accounts!

OK, got it. Manage user accounts. I found all three so deleted the one I created leaving the original and the unhidden admin account.

Thank you for all the help and advice, I appreciate it!
