Great, I thought - then I noticed that it now said in the top bar "WinPE 10 1607", instead of "WinRE 1809"

You probably still had the pe10 files downloaded and you selected wrong option when you selected to build. Just redo it again if you want wifi otherwise it does not really matter that much.
Unless Eddie Doc really needs WiFi support is there any pressing reason to try to get WinRE to work with the display resolution when WinPE has been shown to work with that display?

New for 7.2 is that it can now use WinPE 1709, when I tried try to build PE10 media with 1607 it offered to download the newer 1709 version.

What exactly would WiFi support be used for?

The main plus of winre over winpe apart from wifi is you do not need to download 1GB of adk files.
So as I said not really important but theoretically winre is more future proof.

    Hi folks

latest update works just fine and decently fast

backed up a version of 1803 windows (current windows "non insider" builds with updates with a whole slew of VM's etc ) so the Windows "C" data was 122 GB. from 250 GB SSD (Most of that is downloads / vm's etc).

The whole kybosh backed up from Windows C on SSD to a USB 3 external Toshiba passport size 2TB external self powered USB3 HDD in 18 Min

Would have been done quicker If I hadn't stored download files and VM's on the "C" drive

    Attachment 211382

Why people say taking backups takes too much time etc -- bonkers -- and these same people often spend hours on defragging disks or running A/V cleansing software to remove viruses from a machine when a simple restore from a clean backup wil do it in a fraction of the time.

Some people will never learn until it's too late though. Perhaps keeps some of us busy and "still in the game" in spite of "advancing years".

Anyway folks have a good evening -- no "Tuesday new build so far". 15.00 local time -- same as GMT currently.

    Cheers

18:00 GMT is the usual time for MS to push out updates.

    Hi there
    @kado897

Do you like my XP VM desktop background -- looks a bit like your avatar although it's actually a Jaguar on my one.

I liked the old XP customisation skins rather than the rather hideous W10 stuff these days -- anyway I like your avatar. !!

I suppose if you wanted to restore an image over the network and only had a WiFi connection available. TBH, I've never wanted network support, WiFi or Ethernet. My images are always kept on external drives.

For me, the only significant advantage of WinRE over the PE 10 media is that you don't need to download the WinPE kit from Microsoft in order to make it. I've made both types now, WinRE and PE 10 (1709). Once you get to Macrium they appear functionally identical.

That's why I commented here. I was wondering if anyone could think of a good reason to prefer RE over PE, other than not needing the download?

    Hi there

I suppose if people kept images backed up on Cloud storage -- but with external drives what's the point.
I agree with @Bree on that one -- however having Network access is another issue and is fine if your backup say is located on a NAS.

OK to store backups OFFLINE and OFFSITE which could be used in a Disaster recovery scenario -- however if you were in a flood, tornado, volcano, earthquake zone etc you'd probably have a lot more on your mind and other things to contend with than restoring your last image of Windows 10. !!!!

Personally I just store latest backups in an office desk at work and have the other copy at home so I've always got two copies. Not a problem. I also have copy 3 on a NAS.

To restore no internet needed and in any case do you really want to use basic Internet to restore several TB of data !!!

Well, system disk backup (if you keep important files from it) is not too important, just time saver. Really, really important personal file should be stored and backed up offline anyway, in several places if necessary.

Thanks, yes I've used that avatar since Seven Forums. I'm a bit of a big cat fan.

Thanks, I'll stick to making PE10 (1709) for now then.

Significant to me* (but probably inconsequential to others) is that the RE rescue media is about twice the size of the PE one.

    * I like to construct a multi-purpose rescue usb, bootable to 32/64 Macrium + 32/64 native Win 7/10 + Kyhi so a few hundred MB here or there can soon add up.
