I usually just recreate a USB when there is a version change (v5.0, 6.0 and now 7.0) or when it can't read my image backups anymore (will pop up an error message when trying to restore an image created with the latest Macrium).
I just used 6 month old rescue SD card on USB adapter to restore my Linux mint to second SSD so at least that old WinPE works. It's there just to BOOT and provide elementary OS for MR software to run.
That's correct. I think it is not an issue to the majority of us who have more than 1 machine. But most of the time I just use the secondary OS on the same machine to restore the image backup on the other drive
That's the beauty of having 2 OSes or more on the same machine independent of each other. Just wipe the other drive away. All data are on dedicated hard drive.
But anyway, it also only takes about 3minutes to make one with a new WinPE download.

Is there compatibility between versions of MR and a backup image ?
In other words, can v7.x read & restore an image file created by any of the 6.x versions ?
