Installing a new version of Macrium Reflect

I was just wondering when you install a new version of Macrium Reflect, do you uninstall the old version first or do you just install the new version on top of the old one? I did a couple of Google searches but could not find any information on it.

Just install your new version over the old......or ask Macrium Reflect to look for update, and it will apply a patch to your existing version.

You may want to recreate your rescue media also as this release has a fix for it which you'll only get if you recreate it.

It depends on how the app shows up in Program & Features.... If both the new version and old version shows, then you have to uninstall first to be on the safe side but if it only shows one entry and it's for the new version, then you don't need to uninstall. I'm using Macrium Reflect Server Plus as the company bought a version of it for me after I used the free version and recommended it. Mines actually told me to recreate the rescue media.

Thanks everyone for all the replys. Good information indeed. I'm new to Macrium Reflect so I was just curious. I switched from Paragon just because of this forum. So many people here use it I wanted to give it a try. I must say I really like it and am going to keep using it.

Thanks for the heads up about creating new rescue media. I'm definitely going to do that.

Hi, folks. Looks like another (minor) revision of Macrium Reflect is up: http://updates.macrium.com/reflect/v...ls6.1.1023.htm

    From that page:
    Date 11th January
    2016

    Bug Fixes: 6.1.1020

    • Exchange
      Verification Date Issue
The Exchange Verification dialog would show
the incorrect month for backups. This has been resolved.
    • Exchange
      2010 Restore To Target Issue
      Restoring private Exchange databases to
a new name/location would incorrectly create public databases. This has been
      resolved.
    • File Split
      Retention Issue
Retention rules could cause files not to be deleted
on backup sets with file splits. This has been resolved.
    • VBScript
      RoboCopy Issue
Auto generated VBScript files may not correctly
detect RoboCopy when using the synchronization function. This has been
      resolved.
    • Restore
      Dialog Issue
Hiding the restore dialog could cause other apps to
lose focus. This has been resolved.

Seems we're getting finer and finer increments on revision, slowing down - perhaps a good thing.

Well at least Macrium Reflect updates its self, correctly. Thanks Word Man for the heads up.

They must have fixed their typo in the 4 hourish gap between when I snagged it and you did, Cliff - I see my link had the 3, however.

Yes I would think cloning two SSD's would be much faster method, than using a backup image, from another drive. So MR only failed when you tried using the imaged backup, but when using MR's cloning feature it worked without any problems and like you said was much faster. So to me I would think that MR worked just fine when used correctly. Cloning feature for cloning 2 drives, image backup for making backup of existing drive. Their must be some difference between those 2 methods, I would think, or why would MR give us those choices? I would still trust Macrium Reflect, but that's just me.
    They have fundamentally different purposes.

You can only make a single clone of a drive. Cloning is for transferring a drive to a DIFFERENT drive for immediate use.

Image backups are PRIMARILY intended to revert the SAME drive back to a known state at a given point in time. You can have as many image backups as the backup drive will take. You cannot clone to SAME drive of course.

It just so happens you can restore image to a DIFFERENT drive as well ie indirect cloning.

An image backup is far more efficient in space terms, and if you had a 500GB drive with only 80GB used, you can restore image to (say) a 128 GB drive.

An additional benefit of backup images is you can make multiple backup copies to other drives simoly using file explorer.

Also image backup and restore is safer than cloning. With cloning if you made a mistake and got the full source and blank target drives back to front, you can overwrite the full drive with blank data ie wiping drive! OK sounds silly, but it does happen!
