Than it transfers everything to a disk to be exactly same as it was when backup was made, same bits, same order, everything. In either case (clone or backup) result should be exactly same.
In first instance backup has failed me (3 times) while cloning was flawless and may I say much faster because of two SSDs involved while .mring file was on a HDD and it went somewhat slower.
Yes I would think cloning two SSD's would be much faster method, than using a backup image, from another drive. So MR only failed when you tried using the imaged backup, but when using MR's cloning feature it worked without any problems and like you said was much faster. So to me I would think that MR worked just fine when used correctly. Cloning feature for cloning 2 drives, image backup for making backup of existing drive. Their must be some difference between those 2 methods, I would think, or why would MR give us those choices? I would still trust Macrium Reflect, but that's just me.

The difference is in the method and mode, CLONE = immediate, BACKUP = thru intermediate file ( xxx.mring) and could be deferred for ever. In either case result should be same.

    Windows 10

New version 6.1.909 now available http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

    What's New 6.1.909

    • German language support for Macrium Reflect Free Edition
For Windows installations using German locales a new option to install Macrium Reflect in the German language is now offered for Macrium Reflect Free Edition. To change the language for existing installations please press the keys Ctrl + Shift + L after updating.
    • Reflect Network authentication settings copied to Windows PE
Network authentication settings saved in 'Other Tasks' > 'Edit Defaults' > 'Network' are now copied to the Windows PE build. This enables easier access to images saved to authenticated network shares from Windows PE.

    Bug Fixes

    • Rescue media driver issue
The rescue media wizard could incorrectly detect selected 32/64bit PE type. This would then cause selection/auto-location of required drivers for PE to fail. This has been resolved.
    • Image mounting
The wrong incremental could be opened when mounting delta indexed incremental images. This has been resolved.
    • PowerShell RoboCopy synchronization issue
RoboCopy synchronization could fail if the source or target path had spaces in the folder name. This has been resolved.
    • Windows PE 10 network share access
A network share with no authentication could unnecessarily prompt for a user name and password. This has been resolved.
If this issue affects you then please create fresh Windows PE rescue media after updating.

The way it was explained to me, a clone is an exact - bit for bit - copy, including what's empty, while an image does not include the empty bits, therefore they are indeed two different animals.

Why would empty space matter ? Only valid data is important.

Did you have the original and new disk in the system at the same time? I think clone and restore have some options on how to treat th MBR.

I can't tell you Mike, I am not an expert in Macrium. But I did have quite a lengthy conversation with two experts over in 8 forums several months ago and that's what they told me.
