I am old. First was whatever that IBM Punch Card and Tape System was NASA had. Then I went from a Post Versalog Slide Rule to a Friden Calculator. That thing sounded like a corn popper. It wasn't that many years back I let the Slide Rule go into the Big Blue Truck that comes by on Tuesday mornings. I still know how to use it.

I still have a slide rule and I too still remember how to use it.

Slide rules were mandatory at university- we even had a short course on them. I was given one slide rule by a relative- it's a bit less than 1m long, 5 digit accuracy if I recall. Not quite pocket size, but no batteries!

First job I had they used slide rules that were wrapped around cylinders to increase the accuracy and then we upgraded to mechanical calculators which were fiendishly complicated mechanisms that were always jamming.

As a teenager, I had a Pickett brand slide rule that came with a blonde leather case and clip, suitable for attaching it to a shirt pocket. I was fascinated by it at the time and regret I apparently just threw it away within a few years. Never used it in math classes or in a work environment, but I marveled that there was such a thing.

Hipster credentials far beyond a taped eyeglass stem or a mere pocket protector. Take my word for it. Got me where I am today.

Probably could find the identical item nowadays on the dreaded Ebay. Hmm........................wonder what they go for?

Nerds used to be easy to detect. They were the guys with pocket protectors and slide rules. I used to have a couple of slide rules. This conversation has made me wonder if I could still operatae one.
