    clone failing disk.

    Hello,

i have a 2 TB dynamic disk which i wish to clone to a new 4 tb disk.

my windows installation is on a SSD. but from time to time i am getting blue screens because the disk is failing.
what is a good approach to clone this disk to a new disk?

currently its a dynamic disk and alot of tools out there(free ones) cant deal with that. i am a bit scared to convert it into a basic disk since the thing is already in a bit of bad health. if i would get a blue screen during the convert to basic disk i am potential screwed.

i already tried clonezilla but that one seems Unable to clone it.
i was hoping i could do a sector by sector clone so i dont have to touch to much on the old/breaking disk.

    Please advice.

    Kind regards.

Hi, please don't consider trying to recover an O/S from a failed disk.

At most what you can do is create a so-called 'forensic' image with a 3rd party program - an exact bit bit copy, warts and all.

That is NOT so you can then try to fix the problems- rather to get a snapshot of what you have before things get worse... and give you a chance to recover what you can from the copy.

Programs like Macrium Reflect, maybe Aomei Backupper? can do that. The free version of MR is still available.

    Also see discussion here:
Best image backup software for a system drive that won't boot?
    - ignore the mentions of DISM ....

As for how bad your disk is... try the portable version of Hard Disk Sentinel (don't try to install anything or change anything on your failing disk).

(Are you actually sure the disk is failing? How have you determined that? Not from BSODs alone...?)

If it has bad sectors and you clone it it will clone the bad blocks to the new disk and it can't be reversed some imaging have settings to not copy but being a none system then it's safer to just copy data with robocopy or similar

And thank you for your reply. You are failing to describe your situation clearly.

    Let me help you.
    1. Post a screenshot of all your partitions using a 3rd party partition manager such as Minitool Partition Wizard.

    2. Get a copy of Hard Disk Sentinel. Launch that, and post a screenshot of what it shows on its GUI for each disk.
(No need to run any tests or list text info).
