Windows system images are .vhdx files so they are not useless. Unlike proprietary images they can be mounted and/or restored by other programs.

Please would you explain to the OP how to achieve an image restoration if they cannot be seen & hence restored by the normal utilities [SRD, InstallUSB, RecoveryDrive].
I think that procedure would be great advice for the OP to make a note of.

    All the best,

I doubt the op will have any trouble. He is not silly enough to move/rename and otherwise dick around with the WindowsImageBackup folder.

For anybody that has made mess, It is easy to mount the .vhdx as a physical disk in windows disk management or with diskpart. The mounted image can be cloned /copied to disk using any of the usual suspects.

diskgenius can directly load a vhdx to either extract individual files/folders. It can also apply the contents of the .vhdx image to disk

7-zip and probably many others can also handle vhd

For example, most often the user wants to restore the os partition

    open virtual disk file

browse to the .vhd or .vhdx

then it shows in the left pane underneath your physical disks. In the pic below is
    HD0
    HD1
    VD0

rt click the os partition in the vhd and select clone, then select the sick os partition as the destination

I ran across another blog online about "cloning". It gave me an idea to clone system image backup from external drive to One Drive. Is that feasible?

    You are confusing things.

A system image backup is a compressed image file and this could be synced to onedrive if you have enough capacity and a fast internet.

A clone is a copy of an existing drive to another drive. This could not be synced to onedrive.

I would say No, OneDrive or other Cloud storage can be useful but there will be times it may not always be available when needed.
Also involved is whether one will need to pay for more storage space at some point. Cloud storage is good for users traveling and needing access to files back in their company, etc., access from any computer at hand.

Hmm .. looks like I am good at the moment. Now if only I could make my express VPN get started. As of now, I am still not connected. I get a notice that remote connection was not made because the name of remote access server did not resolve.
I will post another thread on this issue.
