    USB clone not booting

Great site here! Been reading a few threads about fixing the BCD when drives won't boot, so here is my scenario.
Just built new PC with win10. I want to clone the drive to a USB connected ssd and have it boot also. My main boot drive is an M.2 on the motherboard. I'm using Image For Windows. I ran the copy/clone option then went into the bios and selected it to boot but I only booted back into my usual boot drive. The drive size told me this. Support at Terabyte said to run one of their utilities on the clone to make it bootable but it didn't work. So now I'm ready to use "bcdboot" command and fix it. I read @NavyLCDR procedure in a few posts but I'm wondering if I can do it from within windows or not? I want to fix the clone only so I think I should be OK running from my main drive? Please confirm.

Welcome to the forum can you post a screenshot from disk manager showing both drives and all details. Are you trying to boot with just the new drive if you have both drives you will get a signature collision as both drives will seem to be the same

Wow, spent the last hour trying to get back on the internet with the new PC. It seems the nic I have is known for intermittant disconnects - intel I225-V! Had to reset my BIOS. Not good.

Anyway here are the screenshots - Hmm...my image links aren't being taken by this editor. Here they are as urls.

My software, Image For Windows changes the signature during the copy so that's not likely it. Terabyte just told me how to check the signatures and I'll try it now.

Strange things going on here. See image below of IFW partition info. Terabyte says the GUID is the disk signature. They are all different in the image, but.....I'm still getting windows Admin Events stating 2 disks have the same identifier, see second image.
So is the GUID the real disk signature??

And here's what diskpart says - they are all different, no collisions but when I unplug then replug the drive I get that event viewer warning.

    Cloned SSD won't boot
Was it successful? What is the current status?

When I cloned my 1TB Toshiba HDD to a 1TB Crucial SSD using Macrium Reflect, I changed the unique id of the cloned 1TB SSD to that of the 1TB Toshiba HDD.

To be precise the Unique ID of the the 1TB Toshiba HDD was 59 95 78 81. The Unique ID of the USB connected cloned 1 TB Crucial SSD was C0 A1 FD 64. I changed it to 59 95 78 81. When I removed the 1TB Toshiba HDD and replaced it with the cloned 1TB Crucial HDD the system booted fine without any problem. Please note that this Unique ID resides in sector 0 (Protective MBR) of the disks and is not the GPT Unique id but the MBR Unique ID which identifies and recognises your cloned disk.

If all else fails, try changing this Unique ID and check whether your system boots.

For ascertaining the Unique ID and changing the Unique ID, I used bootice. ( you cannot change it using Diskpart Unique id command unless your disk is an MBR disk)

Check this post here: Is my HDD failing?

"The Unique ID of the current system disk the Toshiba 1TB HDD is 59 95 78 81 whereas that of the Crucial 1TB SSD is C0 A1 FD 64.

" The Unique ID of a disk is created when the disk is initialised. Windows notes this Unique ID and thereafter recognises the disk with the Unique ID. When I replace the Toshiba HDD with the Crucial SSD with a different Unique ID, Windows may not recognise it as the boot disk or so I would presume. So before replacing the disk, I would edit the the Unique ID of the Crucial 1TB SSD to that of the Toshiba 1TB HDD 59 95 78 81 and save it to the SSD."

What happens if an F key is used to enter the boot menu? Does the USB drive appear as a boot option? I so, does it boot?

It´s possible to run Windows from an external USB SSD (or HDD, very slow). I have done it, but not from a cloned USB disk. I never use clone, only images.

I was always under the impression that Windows would not run from any USB except a System that was built as a Windows-to-Go System.

Yes, a friend who's very knowledgeable has just done it he said using the Image For Windows app that I'm using. I have a newsletter to get ready in the next 2 days so I will be back at it here then.

I'm not sure how internationally recognised/understood the phrase is, but we have a saying here in Australia .... "like p1ss1ing into the wind"
