Windows Backup fails due to virus

I have begun seeing this same failure on multiple computers, all running Win 10 22H2. As of this post, I have six different computers (three at home, three at a site where I do support work) ALL exhibiting this same failure of the Windows backup. These computers have been fine until very recently.

Three are using Trend Micro anti-virus, three are using Windows Defender. Trend Micro and Windows Defender find no problems when full scans are run.

On three of these computers (the ones using Windows Defender), I have also installed and run Malwarebytes. No viruses or PuPs have been flagged.

The backups fail, it's said the shadow copy has viruses. I've deleted the shadow copies, re-run the virus scans, and rerun the backup. All to no avail.

How and when did Microsoft break the backup feature that's been running just fine for years?

It has always been unreliable for many, and is a deprecated feature. MS recommend using 3rd party tools.

There are many tools out there - read posts in this section.

    Welcome to Ten Forums.

The MS System Image Backup has been a deprecated feature for over six years.

Feature Details and mitigation Deprecation announced
System Image Backup (SIB) Solution This feature is also known as the Backup and Restore (Windows 7) legacy control panel. For full-disk backup solutions, look for a third-party product from another software publisher.... 1709

'Deprecated' means basically that all development has ceased, don't expect MS to offer support or try to fix it. If it breaks, you're on your own.

MS did actually break it for 32-bit Win10 for the entire life span of version 1803. They did nothing to try and fix it and it didn't work again until version 1809 was released.

1803 creating a system image fails with RPC server error 0x800706BA

In this case though it isn't really broken, there really is something 'suspicious' in a browser cache that Defender is blocking from being backed up. The solution that worked for the OP was given in post #4.

Use a capable backup program like Macrium Reflect Free and ditch the built-in deprecated backup program.
