Dalchina, Thanks for your quick reply. I also forgot to mention that the other day I reinstalled Macrium on a trial basis because they will no longer use the free version. I thought this might solve the problem but did not. Anyway, this gets a bit confusing for me. It appears that somehow one of the SSD's that I had previously successfully cloned, automatically ran a chkdsk when I tried to use it to boot the PC. It appears that the disk was wiped clean (see snip)Macrium Reflect Update-ssd-6719-after-clone-fail-12-22-23.jpg and is unusable. If the data on the source disk is problematic, I have no idea how that happened AFTER it was cloned successfully. Both SSD's will NOT boot without using some kind of recovery method. Yes, I was expecting them to have no problem booting. I have other SSD's that I previously cloned that I can use in an emergency but right now don't want to put them at risk until a solution to this recent problem is solved. I hope this sheds more light on the problem.

Last I knew the free version is still available...no more security updates after Jan '24.

How do you know it was cloned successfully?

If it was, and you could use it, being wiped clean has nothing to do with the cloning process, unless cloning using MR (trial) means you don't actually get a clone completed.

Further, if you got a CRC error during the cloning process, that means you have no idea what you get on the target disk.

There are other cloning tools, but you need to check your source disk.

Not sure just how I repeated my post. I'll try again. I have two SSD's that were successfully cloned previously (and not aborted) before Macrium had decided to do away with their free service. The other day I attempted to clone one of them (6719) and the error message (error 9) I previously reported. This morning I attempted to boot the pc using that disk and the PC automatically ran a CHKDSK. That's the first time this has ever happened. When it finished, an error message appeared that said "Error 0xc000000e needs recovery tools". I checked the disk and it had 0% (see snip) . I have absolutely idea why the disk was somehow compromised! To answer your question, the SSD will not boot at all. Although I haven't checked it, I assume the same would apply to the other SSD. I hope this gives you more info to help solving this problem. Macrium Reflect Update-ssd-6719-after-clone-fail-12-22-23.jpg

As I understand this, the disk in your PC was a cloned disk. Fine.
You tried to clone it and cloning failed.
Your screenshot shows its health is critical.

As to why it failed- I'm afraid your guess is as good as mine.

The hardware environment it's in? PSU? Something really odd that ran that somehow corrupted it? Simple failure- bad luck?

If there's a problem with the PC that corrupts disks somehow, then any other you put in is potentially at risk of course.
No easy answer I can think of.

The SSD (5291) that I'm using right now was cloned on 10-21-23. this SSD is working perfectly and is what I used as the source disk to clone the other two disks. How do I know those clones were successful? Because Macrium said the clone finished successfully. After cloning I used to check them to make sure they boot and work ok. After a year or so and more than 110 clones, with no problems, I just take for granted that when Macrium says the clone finished successfully that it in fact, was! Yes, Macrium is free as of now but next month that will change and I thought that if I changed now, it might fix the problem so I'm trying their trial version but as can be seen, it hasn't fixed anything! When I tried to clone the disk again the other day to update it is when it failed (see snip). Between the time this source disk was cloned on 10-21-23 and yesterday, the "clone to disk" hasn't been used. I try to keep each of my cloned disks updated every two weeks or so. That screenshot showed two disks, the one on the bottom is the one I recently tried to clone. The one on top was the source disk that I'm using right now. It shows 98%. Here's a snip of the same source disk (the one I'm now using). Macrium Reflect Update-ssd-5291-420x-health-12-22-23.jpg

If you have the free version, it will continue to function. It just won't get updates.

Yes, I understand the free version will still operate but without updates. The main reason I chose to possibly update is to see if the program was faulty which caused the current problem. Even after uninstalling and reinstalling, I still have no idea what has caused this problem. If push comes to shove, I may have to resort to using another cloning program.

Bottom line, both of those SSD's more than likely would have worked just fine even in my backup PC which is an exact duplicate of this one. The problem was updating them to newer dates. In try to do so, the clones failed!

I really think it would be far easier to use disk imaging, and differential images and/or incremental images as appropriate, rather than repeatedly cloning.

You'd be writing to one or more backup disks, rather than rewriting disks you'd want in operational use. Although SSDs are said to have phenomenal life (no fear of writing too much...) like anything- at some point they may fail. I seem to have seen a thread where early failure occurred.

It's interesting to see the projected life of my SSD reducing with amount written- but that is just a projection against the manufacturer's figure.

This one's been in the PC about 6 years I guess, in use almost daily and in a number of countries.

Not only did those clones fail, but both SSD's I tried to clone to, are now toast! I doubt they can be Imaged either but that's way over my head to even attempt. I'll just throw them into the garbage and purchase two new SSD's.

I use 1TB SSD's. Used space is about 470GB and using Macrium it takes about an hour to clone. What I like about cloning is not only the speed, but that in case of failure, I can just swap the drive with one I've previously cloned and in about 10 minutes I'm back in business! The other attribute is that it can also be used in my other computer.

Consider this- each and every time you handle disks that are not in a protected environment you also expose them to potential static damage.

You may wish to consider the type of disk- reliability comparison. Maybe Backblaze has something on that.
