If nothing else, I have gained experience usingMacrium Reflect FREE
,MiniTool Partition Wizard FREE v10
, andDiskGenius FREE Portable
along with looking atCloneZilla FREE
. VERY worthwhile in my opinion to add to myAOMEI Backupper Standard FREE
knowledge and usage.
For anybody that comes across this thread and would like to know the procedure I used for my specific scenario, I thought that I would list the order in which I eventually performed this task.
- I took an old
USB Powered External HDD Enclosure
apart to get theSATA to USB Adapter Connector
.- Although the SSD came with a single
NTFS Partition
, I ran [ Administrator ]:
Code:diskpart list disk select disk [n] clean NOTE: [n] was the 'Disk Number' of the SSD
- I
Initialised
the disk asMBR
.- I created a
Simple Volume
usingDisk Management
and assigned it aDrive Letter
.- I checked in
Disk Management
forHealthy (Primary Partition)
.- I ran
chkdsk 'n':
[ Where 'n' is the Drive Letter ].- I downloaded
DiskGenius Portable FREE
.- I disconnected from the
Internet
.- I ran my
Computer Cleanup Script
.- I created a
System Image
withAOMEI Backupper Standard
.- I created a
Partitions Image
forData
andImages_Backups
withAOMEI Backupper Standard
.- I also backed up the
Data
andImages_Backup
Partitions
elsewhere.- I connected the SSD via the
SATA to USB Adapter Connector
.- I used
DiskGenius Portable FREE
to perform theOS Migration
from the HDD to the SSD [ approx. 25 minutes ].- I checked that the
System Reserved
andWin_10
Partitions
had been created.- I
Shutdown
the Laptop.- I physically replaced the HDD with the SSD.
- I
Booted
the Laptop and changed theBoot Order
in theBIOS
to the SSD.- I created the
Data
andImages_Backups
Partitions
withMiniTool Partition Wizard
.- I copied the backed up data made earlier into the
Data
andImages_Backups
Partitions
.- I
Rebooted
again just to make sure that everything was OK.- I created a document with instructions and screenshots for use in the future if needed.
While I had the Laptop partly apart, I gave it a bit of a clean and made sure that the vent[s] / fan[s] were clear and free from dust etc.
I hope someone finds the above useful !
EDIT:
The SSD has made an enormous and significant performance difference.
Programs open and run so much FASTER and SMOOTHLY.
Creating aSystem Image
usingAOMEI Backupper Standard FREE
has come down from a runtime of about15
minutes to3:28
[ minutes / seconds ].
The runtime for myComputer Cleanup Script
has been reduced by an average of about75 %
[ The SSD is the LAST one in the list below ].
