Unable to clone OS Drive to New SSD

I am attempting to clone my SSD in my desktop PC to a new, larger SSD via the samsung data migration tool and after about 2-3 minutes the program will stop, with 0 MB transferred and state "Data Migration Interrupted for unknown reason".

The source drive is a Kingston SA400S37480G (500 GB with 127 GB in use) the target drive is a Samsung 860 EVO 1GB.

I am using a SATA to USB cable to connect the target drive.

I have run checkdisk on the C: with no known errors.

My windows version is 22H@ (OS Build 19045.3208)

    Thank you :)

Hook up the Samsung 860 EVO, internally... then try again.

I am using a SATA to USB cable to connect the target drive.
    why?

it is possible that is the problem.

but it might also be filesystem error on one of the other partitions or a problem with the target disk or something else.

Internal connection to a spare sata port eliminates one of the potential issues.

Diskgenius ( free version) is the most reliable os migration tool I know of.

Ok I will try that this upcoming weekend. I would just use a Sata cable to hook to an unused bay?

I don't really have a lot of experience installing hardware and quite awhile back I accidentally bricked a motherboard trying to install something. Additionally, my computer doesn't have easy access to the motherboard, so I figured the SATA to USB would be a slower but safer alternative.

I will get a different cable and try that next. (Sata to sata this time).

I will also try diskgenius instead of samsung data migration.

Also run a routine SMART check on your entire physical disk (instant) using e.g. Crystal Diskinfo. (Green is good)

(chkdsk only checks file system integrity on the partition you run it on- entirely different).

    1) Please post images or share links displaying disk management

    2) Run diskparinfo > post a share link into this thread using one drive, drop box, or google drive

    @Georgeous

Yeah... a SATA cable and a power cable. Like your existing SSD.
All SATA hard drives and SSDs hook up like this...

Sometimes the SATA Data cables will have a right angle connector on one or both ends.
Sometime they may have locking clips as well.
