My "fixit" guy I trust and he has been honest with me.
I wrote WD support and told them the story of install software did not install. I have used this drive successfully since 2011 - this Dell is just dealing me a fit - actually it worked on the Dell - when I did the reset, it was no longer recognized.
I will let you know how it goes. Thanks. I do appreciate all of the input all of you offer.
FWIW I have a WD My Book external drive of the same vintage and have plugged it into three different laptops (and a Linux desktop) without the need of any special software or drivers.
Right-click on the Start button and select Disk Management.

Well, that's the way they are SUPPOSED to work! And, usually they do. It's the Intelligent Interface that makes that all possible.
But, it's been my own experience, that the interfaces from WD are the weakest, and most likely to fail. I've been given several WD external HD's over the years, where the interface has failed, but the drive inside is just fine. Once removed from the enclosure, the actual HD can be used anywhere you like.
My latest gift was an 8TB external drive, with a failed USB interface. It was a full sized WD hard drive, and I still have it today, and it's where I save all my ISO's and other large files. The only hard part was actually getting the drive out of the enclosure. It was NOT a simple Clam Shell design. I had to destroy the enclosure to get the drive out of it.
So, in conclusion, a WD external would be the very last place where I would ever store my precious data files.
In truth, I just XCOPY them to several flash drives of different size and brand, just for safety.
And, if I save any data file on my PC, it goes directly into a folder on my D: drive (partition #2 of my main SSD drive)
NO data file is ever saved to my C: drive. So, if my OS gets fouled up, I can easily restore it, without ever touching my data.
Good Data Backup isn't hard, but does require some planning for the eventualities. (fire, theft and hurricanes)
