    Restore to dissimilar hardware

I did a bare metal clone of a windows server 2022 system originally installed on an AMD Ryzen 5900x onto a machine running a broadwell 5775c, using VEEAM. The version is 10.020348 build 20348.

    It almost works!

But it is freezing on me from time to time. By freeze I mean that the display remains, mouse does not move, there is no blue screen, caps-lock does not illuminate, shutdown requires holding down the reset button for 5 sec.

The only error message I've consistently seen around the time of the freeze is the one listed here:
FIX: Application Specific Permission Settings do not Grant Local Activation permission for COM Server Application (Solved) - wintips.org - Windows Tips & How-tos

I've been through the regedits recommended at the above site, and it hasn't stopped the error or the freezes. Although sometimes when it freezes now, I can still shutdown normally, even though nothing else works (including the capslock key.) If there is unsaved work, that enables me to bring the computer back via the 'app preventing shutdown' screen. This does not always happen.

I also found two AMD services, AMD External Events Utility which I removed, and the other, AMD Crash Defender Service, I have disabled. Does anyone know any other services that might be used only by an AMD processor? Of course, these might just be left over from a previous video card anyway. Both the original machine and the new one have NVIDIA cards at present. It was necessary to update the NVIDIA driver after the restore, so those drivers are up-to-date. Might there be an AMD chipset driver around somewhere? I wouldn't know where to look.

I realize that a clean install may be necessary, but it's a sufficiently involved process, I thought I'd reach out a bit first.... I know there are probably not many people with a deep enough understanding of a situation like this that it's realistic to hope for an answer, but hey. You never know.

    THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!!!

    Eric,

I thought that motherboard makers provided hardware drivers for download. [I always buy ready-built computers so I go to the computer maker's support site instead.]

Just as you've been to Nvidia for a specific one, you could also check with Intel assuming your motherboard is a recent one that they still support their components for.
Intel Driver and Support Assistant - Download
Intel Driver and Support Assistant info
Intel also provide a section on their website for legacy drivers that their D&SA does not cover. I found it very difficult to find the right driver in that section.

    You could then run a Windows update check. It should list drivers it thinks are required as Optional updates. {I always exhaust the other methods before I let WU have a go.}

    Best of luck,
    Denis

Thanks for the quick response!!! I did download and install the intel drivers you mention. Indeed they were hard to find! I downloaded several that looked right but refused to install before I found the right ones.

I also did download the drivers on the MOBO site. It's a 2015 model, so some of the drivers hadn't been updated in a while, but they all installed okay. It's an ASUS Rack Z97-a. I'd think an 8-year old processor would still be supported by windows. I did have win10 pro running fine on this machine up until a year ago.

I had not considered windows update. Any time I've called it from the devices page, it hasn't come up with anything.... but I haven't tried doing it globally from the update page.

I should also note that all devices are accounted for and had driver updates where a device displayed the warning icon. There were a bunch when I started, and not all went away when I installed the drivers from ASUS.

ooh, I just had a freeze, and got an actual blue screen when I pressed shutdown.

It said STOPCODE MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION. Guess I'll go look that up.

Okay, also got this error for the first time:
Faulting application name: Explorer.EXE, version: 10.0.20348.1487, time stamp: 0x1c1c7563
Faulting module name: windows.storage.dll, version: 10.0.20348.1311, time stamp: 0xa501f5f9
    Exception code: 0xc0000005
    Fault offset: 0x00000000001803be
    Faulting process id: 0xaec
    Faulting application start time: 0x01d9665498b8daa7
    Faulting application path: C:\Windows\Explorer.EXE
    Faulting module path: C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\windows.storage.dll

    Faulting package full name:
    Faulting package-relative application ID:

I see storage listed there, so maybe I should run chkdsk....

"I had not considered windows update. Any time I've called it from the devices page, it hasn't come up with anything"
I don't think that works any more. I think it now always says it has the best drivers already but I thought it also always then advised you to run WU itself i.e. Settings, Updates.

I agree that ChkDsk might be worthwhile.

I'm not sure if you are saying that any Device manager warnings remain or not.
If any do, or if there is a Device manager, Other devices section at all, then try this
my ditty - search for drivers by HardwareID - TenForums

I'm going offline now [it's eating time here].
If, after following my suggestions, the blue screen keeps happening then I suggest you create a new thread in
BSOD crashes and debugging - TenForums

    Best of luck,

Will do. No driver warnings, chkdsk says all clear, moving this to crash forum....

OK, no Device manager warning icons.
And you did check for a Device manager, Other devices section as well I assume.

    Best of luck,

okay, I will try uninstalling and re-installing my NVIDIA drivers.

There are no device manager warning icons left, but I'm not sure what's meant by 'other devices section'. I don't find anything in the device tree that matches it.

After uninstalling the old AMD chipset driver (how did I miss that the first time around??!) I went 2 full days without a crash. And then I got one this morning. Thought I was out of the woods.

    Good.
It only exists if there is anything to put in it. It's actually a euphemism for no driver found.

have you tried generalizing it ?

    windows\system32\sysprep\sysprep.exe tick generalize and reboot.

It should setup again from scratch when rebooted, you will to set up a new account, can always boot into the old account and delete the new one later on.
