Restore to dissimilar hardware
I did a bare metal clone of a windows server 2022 system originally installed on an AMD Ryzen 5900x onto a machine running a broadwell 5775c, using VEEAM. The version is 10.020348 build 20348.
It almost works!
But it is freezing on me from time to time. By freeze I mean that the display remains, mouse does not move, there is no blue screen, caps-lock does not illuminate, shutdown requires holding down the reset button for 5 sec.
The only error message I've consistently seen around the time of the freeze is the one listed here:
FIX: Application Specific Permission Settings do not Grant Local Activation permission for COM Server Application (Solved) - wintips.org - Windows Tips & How-tos
I've been through the regedits recommended at the above site, and it hasn't stopped the error or the freezes. Although sometimes when it freezes now, I can still shutdown normally, even though nothing else works (including the capslock key.) If there is unsaved work, that enables me to bring the computer back via the 'app preventing shutdown' screen. This does not always happen.
I also found two AMD services, AMD External Events Utility which I removed, and the other, AMD Crash Defender Service, I have disabled. Does anyone know any other services that might be used only by an AMD processor? Of course, these might just be left over from a previous video card anyway. Both the original machine and the new one have NVIDIA cards at present. It was necessary to update the NVIDIA driver after the restore, so those drivers are up-to-date. Might there be an AMD chipset driver around somewhere? I wouldn't know where to look.
I realize that a clean install may be necessary, but it's a sufficiently involved process, I thought I'd reach out a bit first.... I know there are probably not many people with a deep enough understanding of a situation like this that it's realistic to hope for an answer, but hey. You never know.
THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!!!
