Do the basics- run e.g. Hard Disk Sentinel (includes SSDs) and examine what it says about each physical disk, internal and external.
Already done that
Please confirm you have done this for both the disk you are imaging, and your backup disk.
At what point in the image backup does this message occur?
What type of imaging are you using?
Full? Incremental? Differential?
How many partitions are you imaging, and from how many disks?
Didn't do for target disk as it reported error on c driver message appears at the end of the process imaging one disk 1 main partion plus 2 small ones all on c drive
Presently trying a windows install repair keeping files and apps
Again, what sort of image are you creating? Full, diff, inc?
Don't rely on error messages always being entirely appropriate. It may be this one is.
If the error occurs with one of the non- "C:" partitions e.g. EFI, Recovery.. that's harder to check of course.
By way of a test case you can try creating a full image of each one separately in turn, having first checked your backup disk of course.
Sorry yes a full backup will try the idea

Did a repair install of W10 made no difference, going to try booting into MR from a usb pen and try a backup and I'll try the ideas suggested
Also try saving the (test) images to a different drive/port/cable. I.e. process of elimination.
chkdsk c: /scan
can obviously be run on the Windows partition.
A bit harder to do on the others.
