    Nice guide.
In comparison to the built in windows image backup option, macrium has two restore functions, usb and from within the os?
    Why is that?

Are you sure macrium phones home only in those two cases? I've just explored their website, judging from that they are not trustworthy, connect.facebook.net and Analytics Tools & Solutions for Your Business - Google Analytics are blocked with ublockorigin, there will be no ublock in the actual software to prevent that. It is best to stay far far away from anything that tracks you via facebook or google that's why i misstrust the software now.

The restore from out side Windows is so you can access your backups, even if Windows won't boot.

Yes I'm sure. The program only tries in those two instances. The updater and the Media builder.
Bitdefender firewall, tells me, in real time, whenever any program tries to connect to the internet.
    And in three years....

I'm super paranoid, so I keep them blocked all the time, unless I need them.
And, even with these blocked... nothing else tries to call home.

Starting around the end of Windows 7's reign, Microsoft has been using us as guinea pigs, rather than spending a lot of money on Quality Assurance departments.

Running any Windows operating system these days, is like trying to run through your house carrying a plate full of angry bumble-bees. It's not IF things will go wrong... it's WHEN !!

Get some backup software installed and start using it... yesterday.

    Some "other" reading...
