Create Macrium Free USB boot not working

I have the latest Macrium Reflect Free v8. I opened Reflect and chose "rescue" on the top left. I put in my 8 Gig USB stick, which is formatted NTFS and using the defaults, it seemed to create the Boot USB fine, but when I try to boot it says no OS on USB.

I redid it this time checking - "Check for missing drivers on boot". This didn't work either, so I tried a 3rd time this time checking both check boxes including "Enable multi boot. This time it said there was not enough space and I needed to shrink the volume. Under disk management in Win 10, it said I couldn't shrink the volume, but it did let me do a Quick Format. Is an 8 gig USB too small? Any ideas on how to get this to work?

If you are using the Macrium Reflect software to create image backups of Windows or file backups, you might want to consider creating rescue media in case your computer won't boot up and you need to access your backups. Macrium Reflect can create rescue media in the form of an ISO file, CD\DVD image and also add an entry to the Windows boot menu so you can start the recovery when you start your computer. Once you are in the recovery mode you can then view and restore backups as well as have the software try to fix Windows startup issues for you.

No, the Reflect boot files are less than 1GB. Try formatting the usb as Fat32.

Here's a step by step guide on how to image your OS drive and the restore it either to the same PC or to another PC. This software protects your entire system and is well worth purchasing. This is not a sponsored video. We just rate this software so like to pass on the knowledge to others. Macrium reflect is free for home users only in a non commercial environment and has limitations, however the useful option of drive imaging and cloning is available in their free version. If you want full data protection then you should purchase a license to unlock all the features.

You must have made a system image before, so when you boot from the rescue media you will show it where to find that system image.
The system image you have to put on a USB or an external disk......not on the same disk that you are going to restore it to.

Sorry about using the teaspoon method, but even GURUs sometime doesn't understand that...

It turns out that the USB is fat 32 formatted. I checked out NTN video and did all that, but when he said use Rufus I stopped there and wasn't sure how to do it correctly. I do have Rufus and earlier tried it but got stuck on the part on the right that said "Select or download". If I were guessing, I point to the ISO file on my USB, but I thought I better get confirmation first. I also didn't go through the Windows boot menu part of macrium at the end of the video. Should I do that also?

I need to mention I'm doing this on my main desktop computer, because I have a Laptop that has no DVD drive and I want to use the Macrium boot USB to make an image in case I need to restore it later

Thanks for all the great help,

Make sure there's nothing on the USB stick... then just do this...

Create Macrium Free USB boot not working-000000-macrium-2.png

Restart the computer and hit the F11 key to bring up the boot menu...

THEN when attempting to boot from this USB stick, you'll see the USB stick listed TWICE on the boot menu.
One will be UEFI USB... and the other will be USB...
    Choose the UEFI USB... option.

IF the UEFI USB... option doesn't work, try the non-UEFI option.

Then if you ever do manage to boot from the USB stick, it'll look something like this...

    Ghot your method worked perfectly.
    WIN RE
    Options - defaults (no check)
    devices - usb host controller

On reboot I chose UEFI USB - it worked

I then put the USB stick in my Laptop and it worked. Thank you and everyone so much!

Some USB sticks are shipped without one and with just a single partition.

Macrium Software | Techie Tuesday: Preparing a USB stick for Windows PE

To use a USB stick as a boot device, Windows requires a Master Boot Record (MBR) however some USB sticks are shipped without one and with just a single partition. The USB stick, therefore, needs formatting but the standard Windows format option does not prepare the disk correctly as it does not create a master boot record. You therefore need to prepare the USB stick using other tools, for example, Windows diskpart.

    DISKPART>

    list disk
Identify the disk number of your USB stick. Please ensure that you correctly identify your USB stick.

    select disk <n>
Where <n> is the number of the disk previously identified as being the USB stick. Confirm that the current disk selection is correct by typing in detail disk, this will show information relating to the currently selected disk.
Note: Please be certain you have the disk selection correct before proceeding to the next step.

    clean
This erases all data on the USB stick.

    create par primary
This creates a primary partition on the USB stick using the maximum size available.

    active
To make the primary partition active.

    format FS=ntfs LABEL="Macrium WinPE" QUICK
This formats the newly created partition on the USB stick for legacy MBR booting.
If your system has GPT disks and uses the newer UEFI booting standard then please type the line below instead:
    format FS=FAT32 LABEL="Macrium" QUICK
Note: UEFI booting requires a FAT32 formatted partition and will not recognize NTFS.

    exit
once the format command has completed to exit diskpart.

I was able to just format as fat 32 using Control panel Disk Management instead of DiskPart
