I was able to just format as fat 32 using Control panel Disk Management instead of DiskPart

Then you probably got an USB that was already was prepared for it....

If you are trying to use an USB without this partition you will get an error in Macrium that tell you to fix the disk in diskpart.
I got some old USBs with only 2GB space and get this error in Macrium, but diskpart fixed it.
    Maybe newer USBs is better....
But you really don't need more then <1GB space for this.

    Another thing:
There are actually surprisingly many people who believe that a Recovery USB can fix Windows directly....
Recovery USB opens a menu for you so that you can choose a backup, an image, of the disk which you of course then yourself on advance has done. And this image must of course be available, either on another drive, or an external disk or USB that must be plugged in.

Thanks for the useful info NTN. It was very easy to create a Macrium Rescue boot CD, but I had all sorts of problems with the USB boot. The internet had so many methods that didn't work, like first installing Rufus and also using NTFS. This forum as usual was excellent at addressing the issue and solving it.

So to be honest, it's possible I used DiskPart at one time, since I tried so many things. But if I recall, the last thing was to format fat 32 in Disk Management and then use GHOT method using the correct settings in macrium. Here's a screenshot of my successful USB boot. It's a 4 Gig and is the newest USB stick I have. Not sure how old. I see only 1 partition. Create Macrium Free USB boot not working-macr-usb.png
