Macrium Software | What are the differences between WinRE and WinPE? And which one should I use?
Most use WinRE, simply because it requires no download.
Windows RE (Recovery Environment) is a bootable repair environment that is included with Windows 10 and earlier versions of Windows. It is designed to help troubleshoot and recover a system that is not starting properly, or to restore a system to a previous state if necessary. It includes tools such as a command prompt, bootable versions of system recovery tools, and the ability to access system restore points.
Windows PE (Preinstallation Environment) is a lightweight version of Windows that is used for installing and deploying Windows operating systems. It is similar to Windows RE in that it is a bootable environment, but it is not intended for troubleshooting or recovery. Instead, it is primarily used to prepare a computer for installation of a new operating system, or to boot a computer into a known state for the purpose of installing software or running system maintenance tasks.
In terms of creating bootable media using Macrium Reflect, you can choose either WinRE or WinPE as the type of bootable media you want to create. If you want to create a bootable media that is specifically designed for troubleshooting and recovery, you should choose the WinRE option. If you want to create a bootable media that is primarily used for installing or deploying Windows, you should choose the WinPE option.
I've always used PE with Macrium.
I have Win 10 and 11 installation flash drives if I need repair options.
WinRe is the better option these days. It uses less space than WinPe and is better at sorting drivers. I have had to manually add drivers in WinPe mode, but WinRe seems to resolve drivers better. Also WinRe will backup over wifi.
The default now is WinRe. I think in time WinPe will become obsolete.
Thank you guys, I need bootable media only for recovery, so I choose WinRE.
