formating performed when restoring an image?

    Hello,

I use AOMEI to image my sys.

when I restore an image using aomei-
does aomei perform a format to the drive and erase all of it's data first, and than restore from the image file?

Does any imge software format the partition before it being restored?

    thx.

    Hello @cactus9,
    Welcome to TenForums.

This might help explain the restoring processes of a System Image . . .

    > Do I Need to Format My New Hard Drive Before Restoring a System Image?

    I hope this helps.

Formatting a hard drive (the whole drive) would force sector reallocation should this be marginal. It would also remove all partitions.

Normally when restoring an image the imaging software uses a match in partition sizes to automatically select or help you choose the appropriate partition to which to restore partitions.

thx for the answare, but formating should be performed only in the target paratition.
and formating shouldn't remove all partitions, maybe clone should- but not image restore.

Agreed. I merely made the point to draw the distinction.

I stopped using Norton Ghost many years ago as it could not handle UEFI installations and then was not developed anymore. I never formatted a drive before restoring though.

The only time one might do it is if selling pc or giving it away as new owner might be able to recover data from deleted files.

If you are still using NG, time to consider kicking it in touch.

There could not be a restoration of any kind without partitions, all clone / disk imaging software restore partitions one way or another...

Migrations wizards often creates partitions and copy files to them.

Disk imaging and cloning often do a block to block copy then resize the partitions accordingly.

You don't need to format a disk before restoring any partitions on them.

You can restore any partitions and complete disks without formatting or cleaning the destination.

Last time I used Norton/Symantec Ghost was 4 months ago, since Ghost itself could not handle UEFI, I used a Chinese restore software with Ghost integrated and it can configure the UEFI settings and everything worked perfectly
