    Backing up files problem

Just bought a new backup external hard drive WD (Western Digital) 2TB Capacity. The software that came with inside the hard drive was terrible. It took searching the internet to solve why it was getting stuck on installing the software at 18%. After solving that and doing my first back up of over 600gb. Had some files that it could not back up. Maybe need updated version to the software?

Checked the website, they no longer support their own WD Back up software and recommended Acronis True Image, which was free of charge. I`m not too thrilled with this Choice either!

Knowing I can use any back up software on this drive, maybe just skip the backup process and copy and paste? Or use Windows built in back up? Or does anyone know of a better backup software that's free???

    Hi,

First I would Run Chkdsk /f on the drive you want to backup...

If you want to backup files, you are better off using a file synchronization software like FreeFileSync Download the Latest Version - FreeFileSync that is amazing for that kind of task.

I have never, ever, bothered to try any backup software that came with an external HDD.

Yes, you could use the built-in software, but you shouldn't. Microsoft says it's deprecated you should use something else.

We recommend that users use full-disk backup solutions from other vendors.

The 'other vendor' I prefer is Macrium Reflect Free.

More than likely the backup software is supplied by Acronis which is poorly engineered and supported. Just use Macrium Reflect.

Acronis First full back up today. Seems to be accurate maybe a little discrepancy. PC Picture folder 160gb-20832 files-1254 folders.
    Acronis shows in Pictures folder 160.9gb - 20815 files - 1255 folders.
Screen shot of completed backup. Only took a little over an hour.

I don`t plan on using it, just testing it as I am in no rush. It`s not giving me much feedback on files if all were backed up successfully, anything left out. etc... I like to have a better confirmation with more detail. Already have Macrium website saved.

I take it that this is showing all partitions on my main hard drive?

File/Folder copying/syncing, especially the data partitions or data-dedicated folders, from Source to Target is a time-honored and well-respected process used by a vast number of folks. However, I have always for a number of years used Macrium Reflect and Image for Windows to make images onto external USB 1TB HDDs, usually once or twice monthly. I have even used Norton Ghost and Acronis True Image long long ago.

For file backups to external drives, I use Microsoft SyncToy 2.1. It is an older program but works great on Windows 10 and is very easy to setup and use.
