backup with macrium reflect to external drive

i want to create an image of complete PC incase i need to restore sometime.
i have an external hard drive with folders/files on , can i use this drive as the destination or will the drive be formatted in some way to make it bootable?
basically want to know will the stuff on the external still be there after i backup, and will i be able to boot from the external if something goes haywire with PC.
i did do some research but don't find anything that says the destination media must be empty and bootable.

    Version 21H2 (OS Build 19044.1526)

The destination for the backups can be any drive and data will not be over written.

Hiwever, the Rescue Drive should be a separate USB Flash Drive. Do not try and create the recovery drive on the same drive ss where you intend to store the backups.

Oh tiny - Even an old 2 GB flash drive would be enough, but I recommend you use an 8GB usb 3/3.1 drive (not sure if you can even buy < 8GB usb 3 drives anymore). You basically use any USB2/3 flash drive over 1GB but usb3 is much quicker.

The rescue media WinPE ISO created by Macrium 7 is 285 MB so even 1 GB flash drive will work if you have one lying around (I have one). Granted, I use an 8GB Ventoy flash drive with Macrium and other bootable ISO media.

By default Macrium creates WinRE rescue media, you need an extra download to make WinPE media. WinRE is larger, but at less than 600MB even that is small enough to fit on a 1GB usb.

A rescue disk winRE , WinPE , or both? And that just get my PC to boot , and then i can backup with Macrium ?
Sorry , I never bothered to do backups and whatnots before , so this is all new .

    edit

after reading this , i think i have a better grasp . Too bad i didn't install the rescue disk option when i installed macrium, oh well , guess i can fix that.

To recover you PC you need an image on an external drive, and a bootable rescue CD or USB.

It doesn't matter if you make the WinPE or WinRE version, both will do the job. It's easier (and the default) to make WinRE recovery media. It copies the boot files it needs from your installed Windows. To make WinPE media you need an extra download from Microsoft containing the boot files.
